Unbearable pain when breastfeeding and it's not the latch

I have been breastfeeding for a month now, I have the latch correct but I now have a white spot on my nipple, dr says it's the end of the milk duct but it's unbearable to keep breastfeeding, I have been trying for a week now and it's not getting better, the other breast is now also very sore to feed her with, it's like shooting pain through both breasts.

Any advice on this is very appreciated.

Thrush I reckon.
Know exactly the pain (aaarghh!!(
You need a drug called Diflucan. Works like magic.
See other threads for lots of info on this.sorry for terse message-trying to b/feed as i type!

May not be thrush, or not only thrush....the white spot could be milk clogging up the exit point of a duct, which is 'blind' ie has skin over it. This can be very tender indeed. You can remove the blockage by lifting the skin off with a needle (but this might hurt) or even squeezing it. The shooting pains in both breasts are v. suggestive of thrush, though...as well.

You can get good info on thrush and the meds you need here

Hope you get better soon.

Ooh, you poor thing. Definitely worth taking Diflucan IMO - nothing to lose but your pain. YOu can buy it over the counter. Just don't tell the pharmicist you are breastfeeding - it's perfectly safe but they can be really funny.

The let-down reflex can also cause quite a bit of discomfort although it should ease as the feed progresses. I know I found it quite bad in the early days.

It's definitley worth checking with your GP again that you don't have an infection as this is easily treated. If he is unsympathetic, perhaps see a different one or check with midwife or HV.

Hope it gets better soon

Shooting pains does sound like thrush, but if it is then you will probably also need treatment for the baby, who may have it in his/her mouth and could pass it back to you if untreated. Do go back and see your GP (or a different one, if you feel you were treated unsympathetically).

I get quite strong let-down pain, in both sides, bad enough that for the first month or so, I had to work very hard not to teach DS1 new unwelcome vocabulary every time DS2 latched on. I don't know what thrush pain is like, but this pain is very very sharp, feels like someone's putting pins through each nipple, and it only lasts about 15 seconds. I sometimes get it when I'm not nursing. If your pain is like this, it might be let-down.

Otherwise, either of tiktok's suggestions sounds likely? Do you have any breastfeeding counsellors or drop-in sessions locally, so someone who really knows about breastfeeding could look at the white spot?

thanks ever so much for the advice, I am going back to see my GP tomorrow as I can't bear this any longer, in the mean time, I am still treating myself and my DD for thrush.
