8 week old BF baby producing rabbit dropping poos

ILoveDigestives · 27/01/2008 17:05

Our 8 week DD has just started on Infant Gaviscon for suspected reflux, which is great and has really helped with positing (and, for those following our progress on other threads) weight gain - but her poos which were really spaced out (normally ~10 days) are now happening daily - but the last two days have had small rabbit dropping style poos. Still mustard coloured, and softish, but distinctively ball shaped.

Was told this is a sign of constipation - but thought BF babies weren't meant to get constipated? Is it the Gaviscon?

Anyone had similar experiences? Do we need to do anything?

Gaviscon is dreadful for constipation!!!

I gave DS half the recommended dose per feed and gave him 1 part fresh orange to 4 parts cooled boiled water in a bottle to keep his poos loose.

Please be vigilant! DS got terrible pains from constipation with the Gaviscon!

Thanks Wilkie - how often did you give the orange juice? After every feed, or just once a day?

We are keen to keep the full dose, as it seems to be doing the trick, but she does seem to be straining quite a bit, so the orange juice might be really helpful!

Please don't give orange juice....not a good idea to give anything other than breastmilk (apart from meds, obv) to a baby especially one whose reflux might be a symptom of gut sensitivity.

My bet is that it is the Gaviscon that's effecting her poos, Digestives. It's not exactly constipation, though, is it?

Check back with doc - and hold off the OJ!

Tiktok - with all due respect, the advice of the GP and HV was to give very dilute OJ

Digestives - we just kept a bottle of it made up in the fridge and gave him a few sips throughout the day. I would say no more than 2oz.

Wilkie - well, the GP and the HV were wrong! OJ is not suitable for young babies - anything but breastmilk has risks, and OJ is especially allergenic.

It is hardly the first time a GP and an HV get infant feeding wrong....

Ouch - imagine giving OJ to a baby with reflux or a sore tummy!! Although I am but a humble mum, so I defer to professionals (when it suits me ).

My DD did the same thing, but I don't take any notice of poos really tbh, she was exclusively bf for nearly 8 months, and we had a smorgasboard of poo to view. All different and all with the same yummy mummy milk going in the top end.

Ok doke. Faceless strangers on an internet forum are right and my HV/GP are wrong, my DS suffered terribly, it didn't help with his constipation.

Digestives - ignore my advice

ILoveDigestives · 28/01/2008 11:21

Thanks all - I think we are keeping an open mind about it all at the mo! Right now, it doesn't seem to be causing DD too much discomfort (other than a bit of straining) - so we'll keep an eye on it. Might mention it to GP though, if it's an issue!

Wilkie - calm down dear

There's many a time when faceless strangers on the net are right and GPs/HVs are wrong - obv this is something Digestives needs to check out with her GP, as I said in my first post.

However, you - a faceless stranger - shared your personal experience with her and didn't even mention checking out with the GP. Touche, surely?

And OJ is not suitable for a young baby, especially one with a gut sensitivity.
