Donperidone to increase milk supply.

Has any has donperidone to increase milk supply?
Doctor has prescribed these (anti sickness tablets) 3 x per day and people have said it really helped their milk supply. It's the reason they've been prescribed to me.
Has anyone else had them? Did it work? We're there any side effects or downsides?
I suppose I'm a bit worried as the doctor said a small amount is secreted into the breast milk.
Thanks

I've not had it no but if you think that you have low supply, has LO been checked properly for Tongue Tie and do you me symptoms sound anything like this?

This article from Kellymom on increasing low supply might be useful too Flowers

@dishwasherfrenzy I've been taking this for about 7 weeks now (baby boy is 11 weeks old today).

I take 2 a day as I can't stomach 3 and for me, they give me frequent runs to the toilet! But they do work. I stopped taking them a week or two ago thinking that my body would continue to produce the same amount
of milk that I had established from taking the tablets, but it went down to pitiful amounts within a day. Got another months supply of them and my supply was back up again within two days - so they definitely work.

I think you shouldn't take them for a long time - I've probably taken them too long and once this latest months supply has ran out, I won't be getting anymore.

For background, I have PCOS and had an emergency c-section and didn't get to hold baby for some hours after birth. I also needed fertility treatment to get pregnant. All those factors are the likely reason my supply is so bad. Baby boy also had tongue tie and had the release at about 6 weeks. By then, he was too used to bottle feeding (albeit breastmilk from bottle) and so refused the breast. I can still only get 1-2 oz per pump from both breasts but it was closer to 5 mls before the tablets. Maybe if I took the 3 a day there would be a dramatic improvement too!

Hope that helps somewhat :-)

I was offered them but didnt take them in the end (PCOS + ovulation induction + baby spent two weeks in NICU so establishing BF got off to a terrible start and my supply never recovered). They can be used to increase milk supply but the evidence is really mixed. I was happy to combi feed instead and managed that for 9months. However someone in my NCT group tried it and said it didnt work for her, although i know this isn't the case for everyone.

There's some good stuff on the KellyMom website about it and loads of other tips for increasing low milk supply. Instead of domperidone, i tried other remedies eg. Fenugreek capsules, loads of water, porridge, breastfeeding cookies, i hired a hospital grade pump (medela symphony for £47 a month) and pumped after every bf until DD was 6months including the night feeds. Have you seen a lactation consultant / breastfeeding specialist/ infant feeding team? There might be some other tips you could try first if you are feeling unsure about the domperidone.

Took it and it worked for me, no side effects but I did only take them short term.

I believe Fenugreek is no longer recommended as it can actually cause a decrease in supply in some women.

How’s feeding going in general? What signs have you got that there is low supply? xx

I've taken them a few times, my son was born extremely premature and without my milk he potentially could've have died (fro NEC infection). I can't recall any side effects but my life was incredibly stressful and the time and having my milk supply in full working order was one thing less to worry about.

MistyRock · 04/10/2022 05:25

Just to add, I was expressing exclusively so I could physically see the increase in my supply.

I’m just coming up the the end of my months course of Domperidone- baby is 8 weeks old now. My milk supply was very low - emergency c-section, stress pre-birth (family member had a serious accident), and a different family member died 2 weeks after birth. We had to introduce combi feeding after the Day 5 weigh in, when my baby lost 14% their body weight. My baby also had a tongue tie, which we had corrected at about 5 weeks.

The Domperidone has increased my supply, but not enough to fully breast feed, and we are still combi feeding. However, I think it was worth it for me, as it has helped me bond with the baby during a very stressful time.

Side effects wise, I’ve had a dry mouth, and breast pain. I’ve also had very low mood, but who knows if that is because of the Domperidone, or because of everything else.

Also, I had to push quite hard to have it prescribed for me.
