CMPA question

Hi, my dd is 5 months old and was diagnosed with suspected CMPA at about 6 weeks as she had colic symptoms, a bad rash and mucus nappies. On the advice of a dietician we have recently been challenging her CMPA by adding SMA formula to her prescription bottles. She's now at the stage where she's having one full bottle of SMA in the morning with no noticeable symptoms so tentatively hoping that she doesn't have CMPA after all.

I'm still giving her Nutramigen predominantly though. I'm not clear on whether I'm supposed to increase the SMA bottles gradually or just make a clean switch over since she hasn't shown any bad reactions? It seems like a big step to totally switch. I also have a full case of Nutramigen left that I don't want to waste.

Is it ok to carry on like this for a while? One bottle of SMA in the morning and the rest Nutramigen? Or should I be swapping fully to the SMA now?

I'd probably continue as you are, you'll be weaning soon so can find out more about suspected allergy then. My DC wasn't diagnosed until after weaning (allergy completely gone by 2.5/3!) but I breastfed (allergy to soy as well) so not sure. Could you ask the dietitian or GP for advice? If it's working I would be hesitant to change esp without advice!

I would do it gradually op. Work up to two bottles a day, then three etc. My dd (5 months) has cmpa and we've agreed with our dietician we won't challenge because we've never had things as settled as they are at the moment. If I were you I would want to know for sure before weaning as you'll likely need to go soy free too (dietician told me today something like 80% of cmpa babies cannot tolerate soy) and soy is in EVERYTHING! Silly question but are you definitely using the right teat size? I forgot to go down a size with the allergy milk and her colic symptoms were still really bad! Also any signs of silent reflux? My dd is also on omeprazole which has helped hugely.

Thanks for replying both.
@lawandgin yes right teat size and I agree that it does seem like a big leap to swap from one bottle of normal formula a day to all feeds normal formula. Especially after she's been on prescription milk for most of her little life!

Having said that I'm not seeing any worrying symptoms after she's had the SMA bottle and I suppose im mostly concerned if giving her two different types of formula is ok for her. She certainly doesn't seem to be showing any signs otherwise. Im pretty sure at this point she doesn't have CMPA and her initially symptoms when she was tiny were either caused by something else or she's outgrown it. But like you say I want to know for sure before we wean. It's hard to know what to do as I don't want to upset her when she's settled but we will need to make the change eventually if she's not CMPA.

When we did the challenge, after one full bottle, we were told to switch fully over to every bottle being standard formula the next day. We also thought he was ok as he tolerated the one bottle ok-ish but then it was clear when we made a total change the next day he had cmpa (he was on neocate though so an amino acid formula). I would do it like that so you’ll know properly before weaning.
We’ve been weaning for nearly a month now and making food without dairy is not much of a hassle at all and even better he absolutely LOVES food.
