can i give water to my 6 week old dd?

just been for dd's 6 week check and her weight has shot up since she was last weighed (she was 7lb 6 at birth and is now 11lb 8 and has gone from the 50th centile on her growth chart to over the 75th)

i'm worried she is overfeeding (she is ff) - can i give her water between feeds to fill her up a bit so she doesn't take so much at each feed?

and if i can give her water, should it be boiled tap water, or bottled?

i keep reading different advice on this, so any help hugely appreciated

no you can't

no you shouldn't

she is doing very well

babies have different growth spurts

filling her little tummy with water is not advisable

Sidge · 23/01/2008 16:18

No don't.

All she needs is milk.

As much as she wants as often as she wants it.

flowerybeanbag · 23/01/2008 16:19

75th sounds fine to me, DS has been there every weigh-in since he was born, can't see why that's something to be concerned about.

Lulumama · 23/01/2008 16:23

no,no water required

it is really , really hard to over feed a baby, they tend to vomit up what their small stomachs cannot hold

if she is finishing her bottle, then add an extra ounce, don;t worry about filling her up with anything other than milk

babies require nothing but milk until around 6 months, formula is her food and drink, so keep feeding her on demand as she wants it

i didn't think i needed to worry either, as se seems to be growing longer more than anything else, but the woman who weighed her was concerned she'd jumped into a different centile and said if she went up again it would be a cause for concern - obesity, heart trouble etc etc

the thing is, when dd is hungry, there is literally nothing that will calm her down - she feeds every 2-3 hours in the day, and every 4-5 at night.

i am hoping to stretch the time between feeds, but it's like clockwork, so quite difficult

i thought water might help, as that used to be the advice, but sounds like i don't really need to worry anyway. thank you - i feel much better

Every 2-3 hours during the day and 4-5 at night sounds fab at that age!

StealthPolarBear · 23/01/2008 16:37

Just to say if you do ever give her water (which it sounds like you won't) it needs to be boiled cooled tap water, not mineral water.

cmotdibbler · 23/01/2008 16:55

Unless you were jamming the bottle into her mouth to try and make her take more, or making her feed up too strong etc, the woman who weighed her is talking complete tosh. Many babies change percentiles at this age - its as they adjust from the size that you grew them to to their 'real' body shape.
DS was born on the 75th percentile, dipped to the 50th, then went up to the 99.8th - where he stayed before 'levelling off' to the 91st. No concerns from any health professional about this.

Twiglett · 23/01/2008 17:14

'the woman who weighed her' needs shooting IMHO

Piffle · 23/01/2008 17:18

hi sanwi
My ds2 was born on 75th for height and 50th for weight - he went right up to 91st centile for weight (he was/is) breastfed, nothing was said except my you have gold top, he is doing great.
Then at 6mths he went down to 50th, great they said he is levelling out, now is between 25th and 50th at 10 mths old.
They do differ, no water needed only milk for a 6 wk old

thank you all so much - she just made me panic.

dd does take more than the recommended amount on the side of her feed (it says 25oz per day, she takes nearer 30-35oz) but she is hungry and i explained to the woman dh's family is very tall.

right, i'll stop worrying now and feed her as i have been.

COI see my thread on over feeding BF baby my little porker has gone from 75th% at birth to >91st% at 3 weeks ..my HV said well done
