What can I use to heal a cut nipple?

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 03/09/2022 18:10

DD (8mo) has teeth and is not afraid to use them. This has resulted in a nasty cut on one nipple. Can anyone advise what I can use to heal it quickly? Sudocrem is my usual go to, but I've read that it can't be ingested, so not possible for this one.

All advice gratefully received! (Also, if anyone's got any on how to stop a bottle refusing monster using my nipples as a chew toy ...?)

What about the lansinoh cream? That can help heal quickly

Sherrystrull · 03/09/2022 18:26

The only thing that worked for me was putting micropore over the cut. Dc could still feed and it gave it time to heal

SingingSands · 03/09/2022 18:36

Ouch! I remember this!

To make him stop, when he bites, pull him in TOWARDS your boob. Covering his nose, this will make him gasp for breath and let go of your nipple. You also make eye contact and say "NO".
Might take a few goes but he'll learn quickly not to bite!

In the meantime, a bit of breast milk on the cut will work wonders. X

Stupid question, @Sherrystrull - what is micropore, please?

I'm slathering on lansinoh but wasn't sure it would actually help with the healing.

Thanks for the advice on stopping it - will try!

silver cups are a game changer. May be worth using a nipple guard short term whilst it heals?

It's like a very thin tape a bit like a plaster. It is porous but very strong. I had two dc with tongue tie so had some very deep and painful cuts on my nipples. Rip off a strip and lay it directly over the cut being careful to cover as little as possible of the nipple. Replace regularly. It created a barrier that allowed the cut to heal rather than being reopened everytime I fed.

Jelonet. It's like a gauze, put it on between feeds. It heals the cut within a few hours (if not massively deep). You can get it over the counter at the pharmacy. Honestly it's amazing.

FartOutLoudDay · 03/09/2022 19:13

I second jelonet and lansinoh

Babiesarenotrobots · 03/09/2022 19:20

Breast milk heals everything! Silver cups are also amazing - squeeze some milk into them and pop them on. It'll be healed in no time!

autumnboys · 03/09/2022 19:21

Lansinoh, definitely! I found it brilliant for soreness and cuts.

All three of mine but around this age. I used to say no quite loudly, unlatch and put them down. I had friends who had good success with pulling them in as the PP described.

HDready · 03/09/2022 19:27

Jelonet is brilliant stuff. You don’t want your nipple to dry out as this will hurt more, and the jelonet promotes moist healing.

Flackattack · 03/09/2022 19:29

medela nipple shields and lansinoh

bakehimawaytoys · 03/09/2022 19:44

Definitely nipple shields if you want to keep feeding through it. The Mam compresses are excellent as well.

I personally prefer the Weleda nipple balm to Lansinoh as it's runnier and easier to apply.

Daisy4569 · 03/09/2022 19:48

I remember this, my little one only did it for a couple of weeks though so hopefully it won’t last long! I just did lots of avoiding the damaged side, not enough to get engorged but focused on the other side until it healed.

flibbertigibbety · 03/09/2022 19:52

If it's deep, then you need a hydrocolloidal dressing, something like this Duo-Derm Extra Thin Dressing 7.5cm X 7.5cm (5) amzn.eu/d/dH0TJJ9

It sticks over the cut, holds it together and allows it to heal from underneath. You can feed with it on too. It has absolutely saved my breastfeeding journey with 3 kids!

Silver cups really help with healing my cracked nipples. It is £20 on amazon so not cheap but silver has antibac and healing property. It also retains your milk which means that the crack healed super fast being in constant contact with breastmilk. If your cut is too far from center of your nipple it won't work though.

Go on amazon and read the reviews you'll be blown away!

Macaronnotmacaroon · 03/09/2022 20:09

Hydrogel pads in between feeds. Helps promote healing and feel nice and soothing. I give them as a gift to any new breastfeeding friends, they saved me!

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 03/09/2022 20:33

Oh gosh, so many brilliant suggestions! Thank you all! I will go to the pharmacy tomorrow and stock up on everything.

Can't wait for her top two to come in 😭

If you can't get jelonet try the following: thin layer of germolene, generous layer of Vaseline, put a breast pad on with more Vaseline against the wound. Aim to keep it moist at all times as will heal quicker. Also bathe area with saline after a feed (if possible, allow to air dry before applying the stuff).

Obviously if baby wants to feed again wipe off any excess, but Vaseline is pretty harmless and I think they use it on NICU.
