CMPA/hypo formula experiences?

Hello,

I have a 5.5 week old DD who is suffering quite a lot at the moment with what we believed to be silent reflux. Ended up being prescribed gaviscon which didn’t do anything. A few days later ended up back at the gp due to a face rash/eczema and they suspected CMPA. (Her cousin has it so thankfully we knew what to look out for!)

We have been prescribed aptamil pepti and have been using it since Monday evening without much difference yet. Her poor face rash flares up every time we feed her and she’s so wheezy after a bottle. The crying is heartbreaking and she still coughs/gags/swallows.

The HV said I need to give the formula 2 weeks but I thought if it was going to work I’d see an improvement by now, not a worsening of symptoms? Maybe I’m just being impatient :(

I suppose my questions are:

  • For those who have used hypoallergenic formulas (in particular aptamil pepti) when did you notice a positive difference?
  • If your DC also suffered with reflux alongside, did you need to take separate medication for that or did the formula work alone?
I realise this is going to be a long and individual journey, but DDs cousin was much better on Alfamino, which makes me think we should be going down the same route.

Thanks!

There is a really good CMPA Facebook. I would ask on there.

Thank you - I requested to be added to the fb group a couple of days ago and still waiting for a response!

I've not got experience with formulas, it's me not the DC that have CMPA.

I would say that 2 weeks is far too long to take with such a young baby.

When I gave up Dairy, I felt much better within 24 hours, then 3 days was really noticeable and by 2 weeks I was feeling amazing.

Hey, didn't want to read and run. Firstly I'd try join the fb group again as it didn't take anywhere near as long for me to be accepted.
Our journey is different as my DD was combi fed. But when we first started aptamil pepti and I cut dairy (and a few others) from my diet I'd say it did take a few weeks to notice a difference. She ended up coming off her omperazole about 4 weeks in and hasn't needed any reflux meds since. She was only on 2 bottles of aptamil pepti a day and tolerating it OK, although was very reactive if I ate out or anything. Then when I stopped BF at 10 months and she went onto more bottles of the pepti it became clear she was reacting to it. We where swapped to a nok hydrolysed formula neocate. Ask your HV to refer you to dieticians. GP tried to give us a different hydrolysed milk but dieticians said no and gave us an amino acid milk instead. It's a long journey of trying to find what works I'm afraid

My baby is nearly 6 months old and after a long fight doing much better on Neocate.
We weren’t on pepti but Nutramigen to begin with which is similar. We noticed the difference in his skin (no more flares, no more rash and dry skin) in leas than two days. After less than a week we noticed he was calmer between feeds, his nappies weren’t explosive anymore. Unfortunately after a few more weeks symptoms started returning and he was eventually put on an amino acid formula.
since then we were able to slowly wean him off the gaviscon which we had to add to every feed since he was ten days old and he is still on omeprazole but again we’ve been decreasing the dose and he’s nearly off it.
He still sicks up a lot! The milk is very thin and he’s extremely wriggly so it never stays down but he no longer seems to be in pain when the milk comes back up.
Another reason we’re getting him off the omeprazole is that it causes tummy discomfort, especially the higher dose you go. Our baby has always struggled with wind that has improved with the neocate formula but we also noticed less discomfort as we reduced the omeprazole.

Our baby was hospitalised after having bloody stools after 5 days on normal formula. Partially hydrolysed cows milk protein formula didn't work, baby was better for a day then bleeding again 24-36 hours later. After a period of gut rest in hospital we were given pure amino which worked fine from the get go. No more blood in stools, although we had to wait and see to be sure, of course. So quite rapid responses in our little one whether formula was right or wrong for them. No rash at all with ours though so not sure how helpful this is to you.

My little girl is 9 weeks old and is a twin (her twin is fine!). She is suffering from reflux, she's sick a fair amount, it's not horrendous but weight gain is slowish (compared to her sister who's eating the same). She's very fussy and stressed for most of the morning but weirdly she does sleep well.

She was mostly on expressed milk til recently but now on Kendamil standard formula. Also gaviscon, makes her constipated but perhaps keeps things down a bit and omeprozole which all seems to come straight back out. In the last week or so I've noticed a rash on her face and very dry flaky patches, she has a cream from the gp for this.

I am wondering if the dry skin indicates a cmpa issue rather than just reflux. The meds don't seem to be helping at all. Any thoughts on this? It must be quite mild as she's only moderately distressed I would say. Should I try goats milk, or perhaps a prescription formula? Grateful for any insights at all!

If its a cmpa allergy, goats milk won't be any easier to digest, I am told.
