10 month old choking on his milk.

So for the past few days my 10 month old has been unwell (getting better now), a mixture of a temp of 39, teething & the general heat as our house can get to nearly 40 degrees. He's not been eating much & not drinking much milk although drinking plenty of weak squash.
For the last couple days whenever he tries his milk he takes a couple mouthfuls & chokes, this goes on for the entire bottle of milk & he ends up getting in a right state as he wants to drink his milk but just ends up coughing, nothing has changed, same bottles, teats & milk & it doesn't happen when he drinks his juice, anyone any ideas as to why this may be happening? Not sure if I should contact the Dr next week.

Could he have a throat or ear infection @CTR16783 and will he drink his milk from a cup instead of the bottle?

HSKAT · 13/08/2022 21:03

Does he suffer with reflux?

Possibly, we've no idea what caused his temperature so maybe something like that but he seems loads better today. I've not tried a cup, will give it a try tomorrow

I would ring 111 as it sounds like something is not right, especially if they want the milk but are struggling.

Nope usually drinks his milk fine, this has only been happening in the past few days since he's been unwell

It’s odd that he is ok with juice but not milk. Does he have milk and juice from the same type of bottle/ cup? You could try slowing down the flow of the milk by using a teat for a younger child: he’ll have to work harder to get it but should be easier to manage it in small quantities and may make choking less likely. Could it be that he is so desperate for the milk that he is gobbling it down and needs pacing.
An open cup can speed up the flow even more than a bottle so may not help. But trying different drinking vessels is something you could explore and see if any of them solve it for him.

You should get this checked out by a health professional - you could ask GP to refer to speech and language therapy (specialise in swallowing difficulties as well as language).

I forgot to add that it might be worth thinking about his positioning: is he more upright when he has juice and is his position when he has milk what is making it different?

CTR16783 · 13/08/2022 21:49

@Battybonkers he's still got 3+ month teats as I've never got around to changing them 🤦‍♀️ The cup he has his juice in is different to a bottle teat so I may see if I can get a similar one for his milk.
We've tried laying back pretty much flat, laying up a bit & sitting up right (this is how he has his juice & it's just laying around while his playing so he can have it whenever he wants) & turned to me as if he was bf but it's still the same. He doesn't seem to be gulping it, it's all very strange.

Yes maybe try the same teats that he has for his juice. It’s only been a few days so it may just be a bit of a hiccup and if he’s swallowing other fluids and solids ok it’s unlikely to be a physical problem causing it. but if it goes on the over the weekend like I said it might be worth a referral to SLT so that they can watch him drinking his milk (maybe video it incase they can’t come out to you) and they might have some ideas for why it is happening. Is he ok with other milk based things such as porridge/ yoghurt - maybe give more of these for the moment if drinking milk from the bottle is getting stressful that way he’s still getting his milk even if you have to stop the bottle cos of choking.

Yes he loves his yogurts & ice cream!
I'll be off to the shops tomorrow for a new cup.
Thank you for you replies 🙂

Hey.. I’m going through the exact same with my boy and wanted to ask if the issue for you resolved? TIA x

Purpledaisies4 · 23/03/2023 22:12

@Nbv89 just resolved on its own, no idea what the problem was and hasn't happened since x

Greengr · 23/03/2023 22:16

Interesting thread!

Nbv89 · 24/03/2023 01:42

Thank you so much for replying.. I really do appreciate it.. I’m pleased to hear it resolved as I’m currently on day 3 of him choking on his milk during every feed..will be trying a sippy cup to see if that helps him keep his feed down x

Purpledaisies4 · 24/03/2023 06:48

@Nbv89 good luck, hope it sorts out soon x

Do paced feeding and mimic how breastmilk comes out.
Mimjumi bottles make them do the action that brings out milk that is natural to them. It's not meant to come out in a steady flow.

The action also helps their jawline develop and it's meant to happen over several years.

If you paced feed at least the baby won't be choking. Too much milk at one time will expand their gut too much.
