I can only express 2 oz at work, will ds still get enough during am / pm / night?

Ds is nine months old, takes lots of solids during the day at mil's (although blw so we're never 100% sure of how much he has).

He bfs 1xmorning, 2xevening (both boobs @ both feeds) and quite a lot during the night, at least two or three times I think (though only 1 boob at a time).

But I can only express two ounces at work; I'm rubbish at expressing!! Will he be getting enough milk do you think? Or do I need to think about giving him some artificial milk too?

Also, when I get my first pay cheque I'm thinking about getting a double pump to see if this helps me pump a bit more during work, does anyone have experience of increasing the amount they've pumped by double pumping?

TIA

Ah c'mon, anyone any experience of double pumping? Anyone know if ds is getting enough milk? How much bm do babies need at this age? I know that until 1 food's for fun which leads me to believe milk is most important thing right now...

I could only express 1 or 2 oz at a time right from the begining. I don't think its any reflection on how much your ds is getting. One of the mums I worked for had a double pump which she rented, it was quite effective. I sometimes got more milk if ds fed on one breast and I expressed on the other but he was scared of the noise.

Thanks yogimum.

I know it's not a true reflection of my milk supply, but it's very frustrating nonetheless. I worry about him not getting enough milk, too.

I can't express one side feed the other as ds doesn't like it, he gets distracted & wants to play with the pump!!

I will seriously think about investing in the double pump.

Double pump made huge difference for me, 1-3 oz hand pump, at least 4 upto 9oz on a good day with the double, I could get 2-3 letdowns with it! I think he'll be getting enough with the night feeds and 3 day feeds. My baby bf more in the day at the weekends, so I feel he gets enough balanced out over the week. HTH

Mossy - I've got a lactaline double pump, and tho' I'm also utterly crap at expressing, have found I get more from a double pump than a single. I'm pretty sure if I was committed enough to pump regularly I'd increase amounts.

I got it from here, and they have great customer service, and gave a few freebie storage bottles too.

They have a good resale value on ebay too, so you'd get a good chunk back if you didn't get on with it.

Oh, and I've cut the nips off an old bra to be able to pump hands free.

How's the job going?

Seen this very late but wanted to say I could only express 1oz in a whole day with hand pump and with mini electric then in desperation hired a medela double pump and can get 6oz in 10mins with that. I hired it rather than bought to see if it worked and because as she's 9mo now I'm hoping I won't have to do it for long.
I too am going back to work in 2 weeks time and DD still feeds twice in the day as well as am/pm/twice in night. I don't want to pump at work if at all poss so am building up a freezer stash now and hoping just to pump evenings and days off. Will take the hand pump to work in case of leakage though!

Reverse, at 9 months your LO will be fine with no breast milk throughout the day when you are at work. As long as he has solids plus water/juice/cow's milk he will be fine.

If I were you I'd stop the expressing altogether -it's such a faff. No need for formula as cow's milk is fine as long as it isn't he main source of milk, which it wouldn't be with morning/eve and night feeds still breast.

Your boobs will magically adapt at this stage and you can feed in the day when you are with him and not worry when you are away! I was doing overnight trips by this point with DD2 no worries.
