How to get baby used to faster teat

Hello, long time lurker and first time poster! Was hoping someone on here could offer some advice on moving up to faster teat size.

my LO is 11 weeks old and still using size 1 teat (Mam). Recently he has been getting frustrated when feeding, not finishing feeds, falling asleep before finishing, hiccups, pulling really hard on the teat so hat it completely flattens etc. I’ve tried moving up to size 2 but he gets a bit shocked by it and only ends up having about 30 ml before having a bit of a breakdown and then won’t go back to the bottle ( even if I change the lid to size 1 again). It’s been a couple of days now and I’m thinking of going back to size 1 although I don’t feel like he is getting enough milk.

has anyone else had this issue?

Has anyone showed you intuitive/paced bottle feeding?

I wonder if changing the angle you hold the bottle could help?

If he's flattening it, he needs to go up. Could you try to use the size 1 at the start of a feed and then size 2 when he's over the initial guzzling phase? He might not get as big a shock then.

Thanks for this, I’d never heard of this before but it is quite similar to how I’m feeding him anyway, except I was told to always keep the teat full of milk or he will swallow air? I will try keeping it half full.

Hmm good idea I will try this!

He has had problems latching in the past due to tongue tie and a high palate (we had to give up breast feeding quite early 😔) and it took me weeks to find the right bottle/teat combo so now that it isn’t working I’m feeling quite stressed out about it.

one thing that my husband suggested was making up a small amount in a bottle so that he gets used to it when he is just ‘grazing’ in the afternoon. It seemed to work a bit better so will try that again as well.

thanks!

Yes many parents are concerned their baby will swallow air. But if you think about it, when you suck a mouthful of air into your mouth it doesn’t trigger a swallow like food or water does.
