To pump or not to pump?

Hi guys, hope you’re all well on this lovely Monday!

My baby is 2 weeks old now and at his last check-in, doctor said he is gaining weight and to keep doing what I’m doing with the feeding (he was 2.94kg when we left the hospital and one week later he was 3.16kg). I was really relieved to hear this because as you can tell from a previous post, I was concerned that he wasn’t drinking very long on the breast (5-10 mins every 2-3hrs, one breast usually only)

Now I have a new concern (the joy of being a mum!) about my milk supply. As it’s only been 2 weeks, should I express from the breast he doesn’t feed on to keep my supply going? Or should I ‘empty’ the breast he fed on for 10 mins only? Or should I just leave pumping alone and keep alternating breasts at every feed? (Left, right then left again and so on…)

I hope someone can help me!

Just commented on your other thread.

Absolutely no need to pump. Your body will adjust to how much your baby is taking after about week 6. If you start pumping you'll convince your body you need to keep producing more milk and coupons end up with oversupply.

I'm not trained though so you might want to talk it through with the local La Leche League that I linked to on your last thread Wink

No need to pump, but I would offer the other breast after he’s finished one. He might not take much, in which case I’d offer that same one to start the next feed.

Don't pump at this stage if you don't need to. Keep things simple by getting all that milk directly into baby. That will "prime" your body to make the right amount going forward.

This is a good video about the stage you're in now :)
