Sore Nipples

Sorry for TMI. Baby is 5 months, we mainly BF and my nipples have been sore on and off for ages now. Latch won't be perfect as baby pulls and drags and puts thumb in own mouth when feeding etc
Getting a shooting pain every now and again and some days I feel like crying with the pain when feeding. Other days are ok. I don't think it's thrust or mastitis as I've no other symptoms. Using lanolish like it's going out of fashion. Any advice welcome.

I really don't want this to be the reason for ending breastfeeding as I don't think we are ready yet!!

Has your baby ever been checked for tongue tie? Just a thought as usually by 5 months nipples wouldn’t be sore anymore (from my experience, I could be wrong). I would try go to a breastfeeding group / cafe or if you can afford it seek help from a lactation consultant and speak to the health visitor about getting baby checked properly for tongue tie by someone who knows what they’re looking foe. A posterior tongue tie can be hard to spot.

I second PP check for a tongue tie. My DS wasn't diagnosed with tongue tie until 5 weeks and I was in so much pain almost gave up BF DS lost allot of weight to. The tongue tie operation was quite fast although I think as your LO is bigger it may take a bit longer.

Thanks for the replies. I thought he might have a tongue tie when born and he was checked by Dr and HV who said no. Feeding was fine for a few months so, and I'd no pain so not sure what's going on!

Do you think the pain is mostly caused by distracted behaviour (looking around & sloppy latch etc)?

I find that sometimes it helps in this situation if you choose the distraction for example if you pat their bum firmly or sing or hush or tap your hand on the palm of their hand or something like that while you’re feeding?
Is lying together in a dark room an option or feeding in the carrier?

LLL have a good page on “4 month fussies”

Creams have not been proven to help.

also as your baby grows it helps to pull them towards their own feet to be sure they have their chin away from their chest.
