Blocked duct - why?????

Hello! I've been feeding dd for 13 months now and never had any mastitus or blocked ducts but during the last three weeks I have been gradually cutting out her daytime feeds so that I just feed her twice in the morning and then once in the evening. Anyway, this evening I suddenly got a pain in one of my breasts and there was a lump there. I'm assuming it is a blocked duct as it wasn't there this morning. I can't work out why it is there though, as with so few feeds now, my breasts have reduced in size a lot and never seem particularly full of milk, so am not sure why it has suddenly happened. Is this usual??? What should one do in the absence of cabbage? Any comments would be most appreciated! Thanks.

I think it will help feed as much as you can from that breast while massaging the lump - if thats physically possible!

I had a blocked duct 3 weeks ago and DD is 14 months old... so yes it can happen... also like you I wasn't sure... Are you feeding her in a good position, she is obviously not draining one duct properly...
Or is your bra too tight ?
Is your baby pressing on your breast when she feeds... did you sleep badly on the tummy ???

At any rate BF that side more often...
Let me know if you need more info...

Hi Ellaroo - I also seem to have had blocked ducts every time I cut out a feed (now down to 3 feeds a day, 9 months on). Badly fitting bras are definitely prime culprits. Massage definitely works - and a warm bath/shower can help (you may find that you can massage the lump away/hand express in the shower, often with a fetching fountain effect once you clear the blockage - huge relief!) A real pain but completely normal. Good luck.
