4 week old always hungry

My 4 week old is always hungry, from 2 weeks he has been drinking 4-5oz every 2/3 hours.

Today he has drank 39oz in 24hour period. I just think that is far too much.
I always try to distract, cuddle, give pacifiers, cool boiled water but nothing settles him until he has a bottle.
I've expressed my concerns to the HV, but apparently that's normal? I can't understand it. His birth weight was 6lb 12 now he's around 9lb 8.

I'm just concerned that he is being over fed. He doesn't spew any up!

Is this right?

Thank you

I would say this was normal, my little boy drank exactly the same amount. He was born 9lb3 and was 11lb9 by 4 weeks old, I hope this helps.

Both mine were like this. Had at least 8 bottles a day. Was feeding them every 2 hours in the day time. Eldest is thin as a rake now at 6 and youngest is still a little baby but has 5 bottles a day now at 6 months. I wouldn’t worry.

Is he following a line in the red book, or is he jumping centiles? Is he similar centiles for height and weight?

SucculentSunshine · 07/06/2022 22:31

Don’t worry at all. You will know if it’s too much or not enough by weight gain.

Feed on demand, if that is what he needs it is what he needs

Please do not give cooled, boiled water. It can really mess up electrolyte levels and cause a very poorly baby. If he's hungry, feed him. If you were breastfeeding, you wouldn't be measuring and would just give what he wanted.

Thank you all for your advice, I just find it so hard to wind. He has colic, for the first 4 weeks I used infacol but recently I have found that it hasn't been helping.
He's nearly 5 weeks now and I tried to use gripe water into the mouth however it's not helping either. Just is so stressful as he doesn't settle well after obviously.
I tried all of the winding techniques, but no joy x

Dont forget growth spurts too which will mean an increase in need to feed.
These will be frequent during these rapid growth early days.

New babies only have survival instincts so if he needs feeding, simply, he needs feeding.

I would agree 100% re NOT adding any water into the mix. Stick with milk.

I used infacol for colic but to be honest, nothing really worked. It resolved eventually but my god it was painful for everyone.
All the best op.
