Possible thrush?

I’m hoping someone who’s dealt with thrush whilst breastfeeding might be able to provide some advice at all please!

I’ve attached a picture of 2 month old DD’s tongue, she has this thick white stuff there constantly and I’m convicted it’s thrush but the health visitor didn’t think it was. At our 6-8 week check up the GP said it might be but to keep an eye on it and see if it’s always there.

Since then (one week ago), I’ve been watching it and it never goes away, it’s always thick like this. I don’t have any pain in my nipples and she is still feeding, but for the last couple of weeks she has been unlatching and doing this squealing sound mid feed and then latching again. She also keeps latching with a deep latch but ending up dropping right back to my nipple (and that does hurt!)

she doesn’t have any spots or anything like that on her mouth and gums. I’ve attached a picture of her tongue - does that look like thrush to you? Moreover, if they decide to treat it, can the treatment do any harm if it’s not thrush? Are there any side effects to the treatment?

any advice would be really appreciated thank you!

I have a similar problem! What was the outcome for you in the end? 🙂

Both myself and my baby had thrush in early days, yep. It was agonising. Sharp pain, white spots, etc.

It can be quite hard to diagnose, as far as I recall.

unlatching and doing this squealing sound mid feed

Does she seem in pain? Is she having lots of wet/dirty nappies, weight gain okay? Does it seem like a problem, is my question, I suppose!

(American page, not sure if gentian violet is used in the UK!)

There are some simple hygiene and lifestyle measures you could take to address it - washing/drying nipples, hands, bras, etc, as well as avoiding sugar and upping fermented foods etc

The original picture looks like 'milk tongue' to me. Both of mine have had it as newborns/young babies, and it's exactly as the OP describes, thick, white, always there, but just on the tongue. They've also both had thrush, and with that, there were white spots elsewhere on the mouth and inside of their lips, plus lots of popping off the breast, seeming in pain or upset during feeds. Plus pain for me when feeding and sometimes after feeding.

They should be able to swab baby's mouth (and potentially your nipples) and test for thrush if they're not sure if it's thrush or not.
