At bit of background.

DD2 was 9lb 2oz at birth, failed at breast feeding.

At 14 wks she was 14lb 10oz and moving from the 91st to 75th line in her book.

She is now 18 weeks and just doesn't seem to ba able to eat her milk she still only drinking 5oz (cow & gate easy digest) every 4 to 6 hours.

But she seems to be hungry, but is crying and getting full of wind so is unable to eat more milk, then every 5 days or so get so full of gas she then winds and brings back her milk.

Now my question is should i take her to the doctor to see if there is a probelm or speak to the health vistor next tuesday. Mum is nagging to me to start weaning, but i would rather wait until she is 6mths.

Now DH has suggested that i try feeding her 4oz every 2hours during the day does this sound like a good idea or not.

TIA.

It might be worth a try, doing the 4oz every 2 hours, if she finds that easier to take. Have you tried Infacol or something similar to help her get her wind up? We used to use it on DD until quite recently and it was brilliant for helping her get her wind up. I gave it before every bottle, then gave her half a bottle, gave her a good wind then gave the rest of the bottle, because as you say they can find it difficult to feed if they still have wind. I'm no expert or anything, but I would have thought that weaning might make any colic or similar probs worse.

Thanks Izzybel

We have tried dentronox (sp) in her milk and it worked for a while, i am now trying infacol. I see how it goes.

I'd try feeding little and often - I am no expert in ff but it would be my gut instinct. And ask the HV when you see her.

Waiting til 6months to wean is absolutely the right thing to do!

pukkapatch · 11/01/2008 18:59

it may be worth a try.
tbh, your mom's idea of trying her on solids at least isnt so bad either.
personally, i w ould do the more frequent feeding for a week. see if that helps. if not, then a spponful or so pf babyrice might be an idea. initial weaning is only about tastes anyways.
dropping cetiles isnt too much of a problem really. certaily not what you have described.

TheIceQueen · 11/01/2008 19:03

Have you tried different teats? We had a similar problem with DS2 when he was a baby - someone suggested that changing teats (in our case to a fast flowing one....which I was dubious about) but it worked!

Izzybel · 11/01/2008 19:05

Infacol is better than Dentinox IME. We tried both. Don't think DD was too keen on the taste of the Dentinox one in her milk.

booboobunny · 11/01/2008 20:50

i was recommended colief by a nanny i spoke to. bit more expensive than infacol and does require you to be organised as you ave to put it in a warm bottle half an our before you need it, but it does seem to work. hope this helps.

Have you thought of trying the "hungry baby" formula (I use Aptimal) as this means she can still only take a small amount but will keep her fuller for longer.

Both of my daughters have been larger babies and the normal milk has just not satisfied them for very long

Dixichik · 11/01/2008 20:56

lizziemun, have you tried giving your dd a drop of boiled and warm water to help with the wind. It is worth giving the 2 hourly smaller feeds a go. I was never one for the 6 month weaning, every baby is different and develops at a different rate.

Bella23 · 11/01/2008 20:58

sorry meant to add meant that it helped with the wind issues with both of mine
