Night feeds lying down/burping help!!

Hello,
My baby is 8 weeks old, though was 5 weeks preterm. He’s started sleeping in longer chunks - 4 or 5 hours sometimes from 7/8pm. My husband has him (gives him a bottle of breast milk or formula) and then hands him over to me for the night feeds at around midnight or 1am. When he’s with me he tends to wake every hour for feeds. I feed him lying down and though I try and burp him sometimes he goes peacefully to sleep and it seems a shame to then hold him upright (a friend says she never burped hers when she fed lying down and it was fine).

My question is: could wind be the reason he wakes grizzling with his legs in the air an hour later? Or is he just hungry? (He does not generally posset at night.)

And if it’s the former how do I wind him without waking him?

Is waking every hour normal for this stage for mainly breastfed babies? Especially as his corrected age is 3 weeks? Should I just be happy he’s sleeping 4 hours up until midnight?

Any help appreciated! Thanks

Waking every hour is perfectly normal in the early hours, unfortunately for some time.

There are a couple of things you can try, one is breast compressions and the other is trying to fit in at least one more feed in the day, although that one is unlikely to make much difference at first but it's a good idea to try abs tank then up with as many feeds as you can in the day.

These studies on normal infant sleep might help to reassure you and the Basis website might be useful too.

I agree with your friend though, I never bothered winding mine when reading in bed. If he's especially gassy it might be worth giving one of the Bfijg Helplines a call in the morning or going along to your nearest BFing Support Group abs asking them to check your latch Smile

My DS was colicky and refluxy from 3 weeks. Feeding him lying down was hopeless. I fed him sitting up and held him over my shoulder for 20 mins. He then slept 2-3 hour chunks. Worth trying one night and see if it helps? He's 16 weeks now and as his digestive system has matured I've cut the length of time holding him down each week 5 mins less each week since about 10 weeks. He now feeds lying down no need to burp just slide him across to his next to me cot.

Sorry, just to be clear I also agree with PP frequent wakings are normal but still worth eliminating any discomfort as this might give you slightly longer stretches overnight!

Thank you both! I will try these recommendations!
