just gave ds, bf til today 18wks, a sml bottle of formula, and he has instant hives on his mouth area, is this an allergic reaction?

Sounds like it to me. DD1 had an allergic reaction to mozzerella and it was hives all round her mouth and cheeks. Do you really have to give formula? If so, maybe try the soya version? Speak to your HV/GP about it too though.

hermykne....I echo mummytummy about seeing HV/doc; don't give soya formula without checking it all out with the doctor. There are serious concerns about the safety of this - do a web search.

ok thanks tiktok

i'd say see a doc, and go from there. hope you sort something out. soya may be the way to go, but again may not.

hermykne · 24/11/2004 17:44

doc said i could use wysoy for now and try again with aptamil.

If the wysoy works, get a prescription for Nutramigen or Neocate. As tiktok says, there's evidence soya is not great as the sole substitute for milk.

Haven't got any links. Just read something on this the other day, though. Will try and remember!

I just ran risks of soya formula thrugh google and got several hits, including the latest news on it. Tell the doc - it's clearly passed him by

pixiefish · 24/11/2004 22:24

tiktok- is that as an alternative to formula or bm that there are concers. Am bfing dd but have gone dairy free to see if it clears up eczema. Am giving her soya junior yoghurt substitute and soya custard. is that ok do you think- she's nearly 10 months

Found the article I've read. It's here .

Eaney · 25/11/2004 11:20

Hi

My son was seriously allergic to Cow's milk formula. A doc suggested I use Goats milk formula as some children can tolerate Goats milk but not Cow's. He also thought it was a better option to Soya milk. He did point out that if you are allergic to Cow's milk there is an 80% chance you will be allergic to Goats milk.

The formula I used was called Nanny and I used to buy it in the local health shop. t comes from New Zealand and is expensive about 2 or 3 times the price of ordinary formula. I can totally understand your need to bottle feed for respite.

hermykne · 25/11/2004 11:56

jj
i actually have that article sitting on my sofa waiting for me to read it! just havent got round to it.

eaney i used nanny for my dd at 13mths. and it helped sort her poor appetite out. reg formula clogging her up.

i have a stash of ebm in the freezer which i am using for now with him until i decide re soya formula.

thanks for all your info everyone
