Antenatal Colostrum Supply

Hi Everyone,

First time mum, 36+4. I’ve been harvesting colostrum for a few days now, and while I do manage to get some each time the volume has been variable and in fact greater frequency of expressing seems to yield less colostrum. I understand that it’s generally only produced in tiny amounts but I am wondering if I’m doing something wrong. I only got 0.2 ml today across two sessions having previously gotten 0.4 and 0.5 etc. I had always thought that the more demand you placed on your breasts, the more you would produce - does this not hold true for colostrum in the antenatal period? Perhaps I’m just being impatient since it is early days.

Thank you.

Antenatal expression isn't an easy thing to do. You are working against your body. While some milk is made in pregnancy you body is waiting for the placenta to leave your body to start milk production in earnest.

Keep the bits you get. Don't panic of you only get drops it's all you are meant to get at this stage.

Exactly what @DrJump said. Don’t overdo it either. You’ve got something at least. I
couldn’t express a single drop antenatally but had no issues with supply once baby was actually here.
