My 16 week old has just started being really fussy with his bottles, he cries for them, but only takes 3/4oz before pushing it away and wriggling around. Any ideas? He goes between 3/4hrs

Sounds normal and that he has had enough and is full.

Have you upped the test size since birth at all? My son was the same and we changed to a faster flowing teat and it turned out that he just got so bored and annoyed trying to get the milk out that he just gave up. Worth counting how many sips he’s taking before swallowing if it’s a lot a faster flowing test may be the answer Smile

Thankyou for the comments :) any advice is great :)
Well he was 10lbs6.5oz born at 38+5.
He is now 15lbs6oz and he’s dropped 2 centiles so he’s being weighed again in may and if they aren’t happy they are referring us to paeds. He’s not losing though.
I had gestational diabetes so I believe that’s why he was so big it was undiagnosed. @Kingsleysmummyy I have been to Morrisons this evening and bought size 3’s which say 4m+ on them but I’m not sure if it’s too fast.
The hospital put him on size 2’s a few days after birth. Nicu had him on prem tests and nobody noticed when he came out no wonder he was getting bored 😑

@Foreverboymumma How funny, my son weighed the exact same at birth!! My LO is 5 months on Wednesday, we tried size 3 (mam) and the milk comes flying out to the point he was choking but every baby is different! How long has this been happening, my son did this for a few days but was taking milk normally at night, when I spoke to the doctor I was told it was normal and that baby’s sometimes have days where they aren’t as hungry like adults do. Hope all goes well and you’re LO starts gaining some weight and loving his milk again Smile

@Kingsleysmummyy oh wow really? My little one isn’t 4 months until Thursday. We are just using a size 3 teat now and he seems ok but… he’s slept all night and I’ve had to wake him this morning. He’s gone nearly 12hrs. He only really wakes once or not at all in the night but he’s usually up by 7am.
I think I’m going to mention it to the health visitor on Tuesday and keep with the size 3 teats until then.
He seems to be downing a bottle as of now with daddy. So fingers crossed 🤞 I shall keep you updated :)

Very normal at this age, don't put any pressure on. Let him/ her take the lead. They will let you know when they're hungry and no longer hungry aka pushing away the bottle.

Foreverboymumma · 17/04/2022 16:22

@gemloving
Thankyou :) we have been out all day. He had 7oz at 8:30am and it’s taken him from 12:30pm so 5hrs after his first bottle he wasn’t keen. It took him till 2pm (ish) to finish it in stages. I think there was a lot going on around him and the size 3 teats are way too fast I’m back with size 2’s. We are now home and just feeding him now but he’s turning his head away quite a bit after an oz or so. Of course I worry more about dehydration and I thought guidelines was that he had 5 bottles this is 3rd one but again he’s drinking it in little stages he really doesn’t seem interested.
I vaguely remember my other boy doing this but he’s 9 and I can’t be so sure. Should I panic?

@Foreverboymumma it's very worrying and stressful. If he drinks 500ml a day, there is no risk of dehydration - that's what the hospital staff said to me.

One thing I learned and it's REALLLYYYY hard, the more pressure you put on and the more anxious you are, the less they'll drink.

If you dread to feed them, they will. If they don't want any and refuse, just stop and wait a few hours if they are happy. I fed mine all the time and he completely refused because a feeding consultant then said to me: how would you feel if someone wanted to shove food in your mouth every 10 minutes or even every half hour which made total sense so I stopped and it all fell into place, back to schedule and following the cues. There are days or even weeks where I eat less and it's fine, same with our babies.

OP sorry to derail the thread - @gemloving sorry I am recently having issues with my 15 week old and the bottle. He is scared as we had been putting pressure on him to drink (massive mistake!!)
I am following Rowena Bennett’s book on how to overcome this and see says 300ml is acceptable short time, so this sound wrong to you? If doctors saying 500ml?

gemloving · 18/04/2022 14:34

@Buffyfan26 I'm no medical professional but that's what they said to me. If it's for a short time, I'm sure it's fine. As far as I'm aware, Rowena does say to dream feed if under 400ml but I cannot remember exactly x

Buffyfan26 · 18/04/2022 14:44

@gemloving thank you, I’m sure the volumes will pick up soon. I dreamfeeding at night to up his total above minimum anyhow x
