Reflux symptoms WORSE after tongue tie release?

Just looking to hear from anyone with similar experience (if there’s anyone out there!?)

DS is almost 9 weeks old and after multiple issues bf’ing was finally diagnosed with posterior tongue tie at 6 weeks, had it released at 7 weeks.

He wasn’t particularly ‘refluxy’ before but I had lots of pain feeding and he was inefficient, slipping off the breast etc.

Ever since the release my pain is reduced and he no longer slips off but he’s been more windy, and way more sicky after feeds, and twice in the last 2 weeks has projectile vomited shortly after a feed through his nose and mouth, both times needing a bath as he’s soaked himself in milky sick.

Doing what I can to adjust positioning so he feeds on an incline, burping him and keeping upright as much as possible, but whenever I Google it all I come across are articles about the tongue tie release improving reflux symptoms not making them worse!

Last time he was weighed was before the tongue tie release but he has been putting weight on very well. I’m hoping to get him weighed again but the clinic is weekly where I live and not until next Tuesday.

As far as I can tell though he is otherwise contented - feeds anywhere between every 2-4 hours, lots of wet and dirty nappies, sometimes uncomfortable and grisly early evenings but all (I think?) quite normal - certainly nothing else concerning me.

I don’t know if it’s an oversupply issue, if it even is reflux or what it is, but hoping someone out there’s has experienced something similar and can share their own journey, as I’m concerned the release was supposed to improve things and while I’m no longer in pain and he seems to stay latched on better, otherwise he still coughs and splutters and is sick way more often now than he ever was before!

Hi lovely.
i can’t help I’m afraid as I’m going through the exact same after a tongue tie release 3 dahs ago. Have little ones symptoms improved? I can’t find anything anywhere :( xx

Hi! Sounds so similar to my little one, had his tongue tie released at 12 weeks, initially was better then reflux got a whole lot worse. Turns out he's actually got a dairy allergy. Try cutting out dairy and see how you go. He's almost 6 months now and his reflux has improved massively.

Reflux is a symptom of an underlying problem, for us it was dairy.

Hope you get sorted soon xx

Thanks for the replies

So far we’ve not had any more episodes of projectile vomiting, and although he does still sometimes bring up small amounts I think it’s reducing (in terms of how often it is now happening).

Good idea re: dairy allergy thank you, I’ll look into that if the improvement doesn’t last!

I’m hoping it’s just that he’s having to get used to a new way of feeding (fingers crossed) and nothing else!

Sorry to jump on a month old thread but did this get better for you and your DS?

I find myself in exactly the same situation - I could have written your post myself! Tongue tie snipped last week at 4 weeks and latch has since improved and poos (which were green) have gone back to yellow. But he’s been so windy and sicky (particularly from 4am-9am) and very angry with it!

Hoping that he’s just a bit overwhelmed with milk and it will sort itself out 😣

There could be a few reasons for wind/sickness. I haven't heard of frenotomy causing digestive issues, although I expect any change in feeding may effect digestion. The trouble with babies is that everything is changing, all the time, pretty rapidly!

You could check with LLL.

Hi @5star123 yes things improved loads after a few weeks, I can only put it down to him getting used to the change as touch wood we’ve not had anymore projectile incidents and he is much less ‘sicky’ - not posetting anywhere near as often as he was - fingers crossed for you! I didn’t do anything special, think he just got better at feeding over time :) x

@Corbiere92 thank you for your reply and glad to hear things improved for your DS!

My DS has been particularly sicky and struggled with trapped wind today so hoping he turns a corner soon! x

Severe reflux/GURD made worse by tongue tie release. Wondering if anyone else has experienced severe reflux issues with their babies that has continued in to months 6 and beyond. My LO has been suffering since 5 weeks and still suffering at 8 months. LO is on a dairy free diet but solids has not improved reflux and LO struggles to eat solids without projectile vomitting. LO is on medication and have ruled out Pyloric Stenosis. General concenses that it will improve with age but has been 8 months now! Hospital very slow to support. LO very unsettled all day when small, much better now but still sick after all milk feeds and the puree that LO will occasionally eat. LO still unsettled after feeding and struggles to keep it down, arches back etc. LO often chokes on solids whilst eating or shortly after you can hear it trying to travel back up the oesophagus when LO will then choke, cough and splutter. I have always followed the basics of feeding upright, keep upright for 20-30 mins, burp in betweeen etc. LO breastfed for 6 months now on hypoallergenic formula and tried multiple different ones! BLW is a no go LO is not at all interested. Any tips or anyone who has been through or is going through this please reach out!

Have you been doing exercises to re-train the tongue since release? I say this as some practitioners forget to mention this to parents, and without doing the exercises there isn’t much benefit to the release being performed.
