My newborn fed 3.5 hours ago. She is sleeping and not staying awake for feed At all right now. Can i leave her sleep another couple hours?

Congratulations on your baby 👶 Is she jaundiced? Is that why she isn't waking to feed?

Lou98 · 26/03/2022 00:06

It's recommended to wake them every 3-4 hours until they're back up at their birth weight.

If you lift them and try feeding while they're still sleeping do they take anything?

You know your baby best, if you feel comfortable leaving them to it or if they won't take any then it's your choice. Some people never wake to feed and say they'll wake when they're hungry.

I personally would try to feed them but if they won't take it give them another 30mins to an hour and try again

I asked this question for my newborn while i was in hospital after from c sec and the nurse said i should be looking to wake her for a feed at around 4 hours if she didnt wake naturally

Also congratulations Flowers

She's not jaundiced as far as I know. She's been feeding really well since she was born this morning. A very good latch from first feed (I stopped feeding my toddler 6 months ago so all still fresh in my mind)
I'm so tired, I'm inclined to wait an hour and grab a bit more sleep. My first two babies didn't have as much milk as she has so far on their first day after being born as we were learning so I am thinking probably OK??

Congrats!

You should wake her and try to feed. Take her clothes off and tickle her feet if she’s not waking easily. If she is slightly jaundiced now it will get worse without regular feeds.
All mine have done the same and it was jaundice.

Call the the delivery suite/birth centre too and see what they say.

So jealous of the newborn snuggles and smell!

I would start to try and wake her now, so hard though when you are exhausted.

Forshorttheycallmecomp · 26/03/2022 00:28

I would wake her and get more food into her. Congratulations!

My baby was like this on his second night but he was too sleepy to feed much despite trying to wake him up enough to feed. But then following nights he woke like he was supposed to! So I would let your baby go another while and try again. They've been through quite the ordeal, I'm sure they need the sleep too!

Stonebridge · 26/03/2022 00:40

Wanted to add, my baby fed well too from the get go and no concern re jaundice so sounds similar to your situation.

Thanks everyone. I called the postnatal ward just incase and they said to let her sleep but to try again in two hours. She's woken to feed so feeling relieved.
