low milk supply - help

yummymummy73 · 06/01/2008 19:26

my 21 wk old is only feeding for 5 minutes each side and pulls off and gets frustrated. I have recently had a bad cold and took sinus tablets which I didn't realise can dry up your milk. I am stressed that I don't have enough milk. it's getting harder to express milk also. my milk supply has been great up until now. any advice?

If you've stopped taking the tablets and keep putting baby to the breast, your supply will replenish. It would probably help to rest more as well.

yummy - the effect of those tablets is minor and temporary, if anything. Just keep offering the breast to your baby.

Some babies only want 5 mins at a time on the breast - check you are not assuming she wants more and annoying her by not letting her finish when she wants to.

Just seen on another thread you are offering a 5 oz bottle of formula....sorry, yummy, but that is going to undermine anything else you do. If you feel you must give a supplement, then you could start by making it a smaller one....what do you think?

tiktok, I offer ebm only and have never given formula yet. i have a lot of my milk stored in the freezer which has been a blessing. He seems to feed longer overnight when he is not distracted.

yummy - makes no difference whether it's formula or ebm to the impact on your breastfeeding, though.

Giving a bottle of anything on top of a breastfeed which lengthens the gap between feeds is not good if you are concerned about increasing your supply.

tiktok - okay i'll remember that. it is just so stressful to see him frustrated and unsatisfied at the end of a feed. today he has continued to feed for only 5 mins but seems to be content afterwards so maybe things are looking up.

I can understand the anxiety when he seems upset, yummy - maybe offer him less than 5 oz though?
