White Powder bits in formula milk after making

Hi everyone. Need help in formula milk making plus badly need some reassurance aswell. When I was making formula milk for my 2.5 months old baby I put a drop to check the temprature but I got extremely worried when the drop fell and I saw white powder bits on my hand ( small powder white bits) then I checked by putting multiple drops on my hand and in most of them there were white bits. I am so scared by the fact that I didn't notice it before as the bits were not visible in actual drop but only when the drop fell from hand. I am extremely worried that we were giving our baby harmful milk. Cant even eat due to this stress. Some reassuring stories please?
I used aptamil and kendermil organic. I use tap water boil it in a glass kettle. Leave for 25 to 30 minutes, then add the formula intl water, shake, swirl and cool down by using cold tap water. Please tell me what I can do to avoid those bits. Some advice please?
Hope to hear back soon.

Please don’t worry. I’ve had the same problem. Just shake bottle for 10 seconds thoroughly. If you still think there’s bits of powder shake it again. Please be reassured your ok. I’ve had the same problem. To be honest I think your baby wouldn’t take the milk it there was bits of powder floating about in the formula x

Lookingforpositivity · 27/03/2022 03:54

@loudsoph how did you fix it then?
I keep shaking it but once I did it for good 10 minutes and when I put the drop on my hand there were still white powder dots left behind when the drop fell.

Hi op, I use the perfect prep machine which is so handy. However out and about I find if you put a really hot (just boiled) 2oz of water in first, add the powder and swirl it really well, rather than shake, it dissolves better. Then top up with cooked boiled water (that I keep separately in a sterilised bottle) to the oz you need. This would also save you waiting 30mins with a hungry baby!!

Lookingforpositivity · 27/03/2022 19:02

@koalarainbow sounds brilliant thank you so much. I will definitely try this.

I've found it's ok up to now by shaking it vigorously. I so normally use boiling water though and let it cool x

You need to add boiling water to the powder, allowing it to cool first is where you are going wrong here

How so? I, saying I'm not finding this problem with my feeds as I'm using boiling water and shaking vigorously
Bushkin · 27/03/2022 19:53

Because it’s the correct way to make up a formula bottle. It dissolves the powder and kills any bacteria.

I often added cooled boiled water after eg if it was 150mls water I’d add 60mls boiling then shake to dissolve then add 90mls cold from fridge so it was drinking temp. I think this is effectively what the perfect prep machine does.

It’s essential that the powder is mixed with boiling water though

Hmm ok. Perfect Prep machine army recommended by the NHS

Do you add the powder first then the add water
Bushkin · 27/03/2022 20:03

Hot water then powder- mixed then pre measured cold water so overall volume is correct

Alternative is full volume boiling water and leave bottle to cool

Most important but is that powder is mixed with boiling water

You made it sound like you add the water after the powder which would confuse people. Don't you think it's more risky adding more cooled water to the feeds. For example then your adding exposing the bottle to the air??
Bushkin · 27/03/2022 20:07

We have a temp gauge on kettle so I actually used 80c rather than ‘boiling’ - I believe the important bit is that it’s over 70c

Bushkin · 27/03/2022 20:08

No- the risk is no killing the bacteria in the formula

@Bushkin that’s not true tho. On the back of formula it literally tells you to allow the water to cool for 30mins. You’re not meant to boil the kettle and then make a bottle straight away
Bushkin · 27/03/2022 20:32

Holy shit, I was only was only suggesting that the water wasn’t hot enough and that why it’s not dissolving properly. No need for the cross examination.

Many people seem to use water that is not hot enough and it’s dangerous. Was only pointing that out.

babywalker56 · 27/03/2022 20:36

Fair enough. Baby formula is something you don’t want to be making incorrectly tho.

OP, I use Aptamil and I remember being concerned when my DD was little like yours.
I had to make sure I was shaking the bottle for 10 seconds and not swirling it as that wasn’t doing much. I’d try shaking for a set amount of time and leaving it to cool in cold water (if you make bottles in bulk). Carry on letting the water cool for half hour tho, that’s what it says to do on the box

Why do you think your so right?? It's irritating

I'm a new Mum and I'm a bit concerned. My son is 12 weeks old and has had a runny poo. I can't seem to distinguish if it's diarrhea or just normal. There was no mucus in it and wasn't watery. It's the same colour as his poos normally are. Can anyone help me. Bit anxious.

Bushkin · 28/03/2022 08:39

@loudsoph because NHS advice is you leave water ‘no more than 30mins’ and it’s ‘at least 70c’ there’s ever chance that OPs water isn’t so she could try leaving it less so the water is hotter.

Not sure why you’re bothering to ask for advice now for your baby when you’re so rude about it
