so... thought i had flu so took paracetemol, which some lovely mumsnetters told me was safe. Turns out it's a kidney infection. Was prescribed anitibiotics - cef... something which i had a reaction to (forgotton the name! ). Was then prescribed Trimethoprim, and despite telling dr several times i was breastfeeding the leaflet in the box said DO NOT TAKE WHILE BREASTFEEDING. Went back and asked for something else and was given amoxicillin. Also given co-codamol for pain. My poor poor baby - are all these yucky pills going to harm him? I feel anxious every time i bf incase i'm poisoning him . To be honest I don't think the doctor really knows what's safe and what isn't... that's just my impression...

no, you should be fine with those

ScaryHairy · 05/01/2008 23:04

Co-codemol is ok I believe, since it is prescribed to women who have had c-sections.
Not sure about the anti-biotics; someone cleverer will appear soon.

Hi Sushistar,

Relax, you're doing fine. As you can see from the links Trimethoprim is fine to take whilst bfing. It's just that many drugs are not licensed to take whilst bfing (I think because it's difficult to conduct studies i.e. find 100 bfing women willing to take drugs and see the effects) but they are deemed to be safe as what has been tested is the levels of drug present in breast milk. Something like that anyway! Those BFN leaflets are great.

You are doing a great job bfing so sit back on concentrate on getting yourself better and think about all the benefits that your baby is getting from your milk.

Yes, both cefalexin and trimethroprim are fine for breastfeeding. trimethroprim not ok during some stages of pg but fine at this point.
