Bedtime porridge to discourage cluster feed?

I've posted before that dd (now 6mo) saves up most of her feeding till the evening. I'd really like to encourage her out of t his cos I'm knackered! We've just started weaning and she loves millet porridge. wondering about giving it at end of day. what do you think? any experience? i don't want to deprive her of her main milk feed but i'd love to move it around a bit. but maybe it wouldn't work. even wondering abt bedtime formula feed - never thought i would. thoughts, experiences, reassurance welcome!

You could try milky porridge (maybe with ebm?) at bedtime - it works wonders with most children. DD is now 4.8 and still nods off and sleeps in if she has porridge before bed.

Oats contain something (tryptophan maybe? Will look it up) that is sleep-promoting, so unless you are avoiding gluten I'd go for normal porridge.

YES YES YES - All of us April 07 babies have ben trying it over the past few nights as none of the babies are sleeping - working wonders!!! Or weetabix"!

GMM - I saw this thread and thought of us!

I do give prrige and having some success but DS seemed to stop cluster feeding at about 6 or 7 months anyway (only started porridge in last few weeks). I just realised one day that he had a bedtime feed instead of many feeds! So it might sort itself out. ON the other hand it can't hurt to give her some anyway, would she have milk straight after?

certainly cant make things worse.... esp if you make with milk - more filling

Sushipaws · 05/01/2008 21:50

Eeeeek, your milk is the best, formula won't be the magic answer. It tastes different so babies tend to fill up on it, so it might work for a couple of nights but won't stick. A few of my friends started doing this and it was the beginning of the end for thier breastfeeding. I sympathise with you but I think you should try the porride option first or try feeding from both sides.

Thanks! Oh I'm excited about porridge for bed tomorrow. I eat oats and was giving her millet i don't know why really. Sushipaws, totally agree, just needing some practical solutions, but sounds like porridge might work.
Hurrah for porridge - will let you know.

Good Luck, got fingers crossed for you both.

Have to say that I gave a ff at bed time from 3 months, until 8 months, didnt make much difference to the sleep, although it did give me a much needed break in the evening. - This is only my opinion of my experience though.

I'm sure they go through ANOTHER growth spurt at 6 months which might explain it?

NoviceKnitter · 05/01/2008 23:19

DD has been growth spurting since day one!

Is there any reason to withold gluten at this age? No family intolerance to my knowledge...

Well, we tried millet porridge before her bath and if anything it seemed to give her an energy boost - was awake till 9.30! Will try oats tomorrow... think she may be on a growth spurt tho so will keep trying and see if it helps.
