Only small feeds

I’m going to speak to the gp on Monday but my two week old was diagnosed with bad reflux and was prescribed gaviscon by the hospital doctor who said to feed him 1.5 oz no more than 2 which equals 12 feeds a day which is fine as he only fits in 2 oz before being full and sleeping.
I spoke to the gp yesterday as I saw on the gaviscon it says no more than 6 sachets in a day and wanted to clarify something and she said he should be having 4oz every 4 hours instead of 2 every 2 but he literally won’t drink that much! Plus I don’t want him to be sick trying to force feed so much as that definitely won’t help the reflux.
My question is, how did you get your baby to take larger feeds and have you ever had a baby that sleeps quite soon into feeding so he won’t take anymore?

Also to add my baby does have a tongue tie we’re waiting on a referral for. Do you think this is contributing? I thought it affected breastfeeding more but maybe not?

This young a baby will feed on demand. Small and often is fine if they're gaining weight well.

I agree feed on demand.
My son had reflux also and I just went with his lead. He ended up getting himself in a good pattern with bottles and of course they won't take it if they aren't hungry.
4 oz every 4 hours seems like a very long stretch to me for a 2 week old.
Just follow him.

I think GP suggested that as the gaviscon must be mixed with minimum 4oz of milk.

What bottle/teat size are you using? He could be struggling if the flow is too slow.

@Twizbe and @Violetmo0n thanks for your replies and confirming what I thought. We feed on demand and however much he wants but now just making sure we don’t overfeed him by mistaking feeding cues and give to much gaviscon. As far as his weight, he’s back at his birthweight and steadily putting it on so I think I’m over worrying.

@Vicky1989x yes that’s what I thought because I couldn’t see how I was going to be able to split such small sachets and even though it’s a waste, we’d make up a 4 oz bottle every time so the gaviscon was the right amount. However I clarified with her what she meant and she said for his weight (8lb 3-4) he should be drinking closer to 4 ounces at a time! But he’s only just 2 weeks old so of course he’s not going to fit that much in. We use Mam bottles and at first had the newborn size because of the reflux but the past week we moved up to size 1 teats which is much better and notice he isn’t working as hard to get milk as before. Am I right in thinking size 2 is way too big for a 2 week old for now?

@Pizzaandsushi I found Mam bottles not that great personally, the teat sizes seemed a lot slower to me and my DD hated them as a result. I used Nuk bottles. Size 2 might be too fast, would cause him to drink too fast then giving him reflux/wind. Some babies prefer little and often, he might get better at taking more the bigger he gets, he’s only 2 weeks so just persevere for now.
