worth investing in breastfeeding chair

Expecting our 2nd in March and wondering whether to invest in bf chair in our living room.
Bf our first for 5 months but had lots of back pain throughout and difficulty positioning in early days (he was heavy - 4.2kg at birth). I'd like to bf second one longer this time and wondering if a good chair would help... Any thoughts?

A good chair definitely helps. DD was 4.4kg and is now 9months. During the day I've got a system of cushions on the sofa that works fairly well, but I struggle at night (tried co-sleeping but now she wriggles so much it's not getting me much rest). Only chairs we had were either too high or gave me absolutely no back support.

DH got so fed up with me whinging he gave me the loan of his home office chair (ludicrously expensive and paid for by work ;)) over Xmas and it's made SO much difference. Only problem is now he wants it back...

For the early days have you looked at any of the new support cushions that are out? I thought the My Brest Friend looked good, but by the time I saw it I figured DD's backside would be off the end already!

I really want to get one, kiddicare have some on offer though I have no idea how good they are.

we bought a really comfy leather armchair which i sat in and made sure my back was on the back of the chair and my feet on the floor. I am 5ft 4in and thin and a lot of contemporary chairs don't work except with loads of cushions. it was an awesome bf chair and now blends in nicely with the rest of our living room furniture.

I found one invaluable with DS, and still use it now. It's in his room because I needed it for nightfeeds. It's a cheapo kiddicare one - in retrospect, I'd have gone dearer, or at least got one with washable cushion covers!

With DD I haven't needed one - amazing how much easier it is second time round! But I do intend to buy one of the Ikea Poang chairs & footstools for her room when we move, because I'll need something for the night-feeds.

i tended to lie down to feed, that way i was resting more!

I have a feeding chair (Cosatto gliding thing with footstool) which was great for night and nap time feeds. One of the best baby purchases we made.

katyjo · 05/01/2008 11:12

I had a dutatlier (not how you spell it at all) , my mum bought it as a present, very expensive about £300 I think, I got the footstool as well (fantastic!). I think I would have given up bf if I hadn't had the chair made it so much easier, I use it to read to ds when he goes to bed and he's 2 now. I am expecting number 2 in May and looking forward to using it again!
Would absolutely recommend, you can try them out in John Lewis and mothercare but if you order on line can get them cheaper, take 6 weeks delivery as come direct from manufacturer.

Stefka · 05/01/2008 13:04

If I had the money I would get one. I sat on one in John Lewis yesterday and it was lovely. Sadly we are skint so the sofa will have to do for me.

MrsBadger · 05/01/2008 13:07

hated gliders, made me feel sick

maybe this time get a bf counsellor to help you with positioning right from the start?

fishie · 05/01/2008 13:07

not if you are travel sick - i tried one in john lewis too and felt dreadful.

Twiglett · 05/01/2008 13:08

I really wanted one of those glider chairs but it was far too much

I think a bf pillow might help and ensuring you have pillows behind you too

but if you want one get one

much cheaper than bf-specfic cushion/pillows etc

Tommy · 05/01/2008 13:14

I've got the Dutalier one - DH bought it when I was pregnant with DS1. I wouldn't have been without it - it's seen me through 3 babies now. Really good for comfort when pregnant as well as breastfeeding. DH uses it to rock babies to sleep as well.

It's a bit bashed now - we have a denim type upholstery on it which is looking a bit worn but we will probably get it recovered because it is such a good chair.

lulusmama · 05/01/2008 14:55

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll research the various chairs people mentioned.
I did the cushions on the sofa thing and the pillows on the bed but found that as he got bigger and heavier (and would sink into the pillows) I was spending more time hunched over. He still fed fine of course. :-)
Anyway, thanks again, will post again if I do decide to buy a chair and find it was worth it.
