9 week old crying on bottle

Hello,

We've had a bit of a nightmare with my DDs feeding from the start.

BF for 3 weeks and she started refusing, cow & gate for a week started refusing and came out in rash, diagnosed with cows milk allergy and given hypoallergenic formula but refused even more and barely took anything. Eventually came to the conclusion it wasn't an allergy just reflux so prescribed gaviscon and back on cow and gate, severely constipated so took her off that gaviscon, now she's still refusing bottles, takes between 1-3oz every 4 hours and is straining while feeding, pulling away, really bad gas and generally quite an unhappy baby unless asleep.

Has anyone been through this?
Shall I change the milk?
Is there anything I can try?
Tried infacol and gripe water also.

Just want my baby to be happy!!

Thanks x

Infacol won’t help with reflux, orange flavouring is quite acidic. Try dentinox colic drops.
After feeding keep baby upright for 15-30 minutes to help the milk stay down. This will reduce the reflux pain.
Speak to the drs about medication, gaviscon didn’t work for my som but omeprazole did.

I’d go back to the doctors and ask for a different reflux medication.

Very similar situation here. Gaviscon didn’t make her constipated but wasn’t (isn’t) really keeping the milk down. Spoke to the GP and they prescribed something else (can’t think of the name at the moment but it begins with a C). Started on SMA formula and tried their reflux version but she started refusing bottles. Switched to Cow and Gate and DD is better on it but not perfect. Still quite refluxy but no longer in pain the same which is the main thing. I was torn between aptamil and cow and gate but the local shop didn’t have aptamil in when I went in. Maybe try a different milk though. I changed slowly over two days and leaving the two feeds before bedtime as the old formula, better the devil you know at nighttime I guess. The first couple of days on Cow and Gate I wasn’t convinced but I think you need to give it at least a week. I’m still not convinced Cow and Gate is the best for DD but she’s not arching her back or choking now.

Why did they decide it wasn’t cows milk protein allergy after formula gave her a rash? There are some lactose free formulas out there too which you could try for yourself. Babies with reflux do tend to take smaller feeds but DD went into taking tiny amounts (probably at 9 weeks too, she’s now 12 weeks) but she did start taking bigger feeds again when I switched. She has been refusing a bottle a bit today but I couldn’t seem to fill her over the weekend so I think she does reactive feed and eat to her appetite.

Some HV have floated the idea of CMPA with DD, some have just said (rather helpfully) she’s a baby that doesn’t get on with milk.

Hi, my little boy has acid reflux and it really effecting his feeding in the first few weeks too so this definitely sounds like reflux. He constantly fussed, cried, pulled away, arched back etc during feeds and exhausted himself due to crying all the time when he was awake, he was in bad discomfort/pain. He too was given gaviscon sachets but this added to the constant crying as he then became really constipated.
He was then given Carobel in replacement to the gaviscon which cleared up constipation and helped with the reflux, he was also prescribed medicines and acid suppressors. He is not 3 month old and he's like a total different baby, can take up to 12oz with no issues during the feed and he is now happy and content during wakeful hours rather than being unsettled constantly.

Definitely try going back to the doctors and mention carobel and acid suppressors.

Hope this helps Smile

Just a thought but have you tried her with teats with a different flow? And checked they are not blocked? Babies sometime pull on teats (and boobs) to try and make the milk flow faster?
