Feeding covers

Do you use a feeding cover? Or do you just put a blanket over when breastfeeding in public?

I dont see many for sale online and have made them myself but not sure if they are still fashionable today.

Any feedback would be great thanks!

They were very popular 20 years ago when mine were babies. I just draped a muslin if I felt I wanted to.

I don't breastfeed but spend a lot of time with women that do. I have never seen anyone use anything like that. Many just pull up their top and have a camisole on underneath that they pull down, this has always seemed pretty discreet to me and does not draw attention like the cover potentially might. Could always use a muslin for extra coverage I suppose!

I don’t like them personally - seems like wearing a giant sign saying LOOK I AM BREASTFEEDING. I was happy just to hoick a boob out though and I know not everyone feels that way!

HalloHello · 16/02/2022 09:50

Total faff! I tried with my eldest but was harder than just popping boob out discreetly!

AnotherMansCause · 16/02/2022 09:50

DD wouldn't tolerate one. My mother used to try to cover me up, DD would instantly jerk her head back, without first releasing her latch, very painful for me. After the first couple of times I refused to even sit down with my mother (or sister, who also tried it) while DD was BFing. Bollocks to that. Breastfeeding is natural & doesn't need to be hidden away. I used to sit in a discreet position if one was available (in a cafe etc) but if not I just got on with it.

Anyone who doesn't want to see a woman breastfeeding her child is welcome to look in the other direction.

TrialofTrials · 16/02/2022 09:52

No one really uses them. Most people just use the one top up and one top down. I find that more discreet and much less faffy. I just ensure that i have a strappy top underneath wherever i go.

Rrrob · 16/02/2022 09:52

I sometimes used a big muslin or swaddle. Proper feeding covers are a faff.

MartinMartinMarti · 16/02/2022 09:56

That looks far more trouble than it’s worth.

Feeding is surprising my lunch discreet.

RedCandyApple · 16/02/2022 09:56

I used a thin blanket to cover the top of mine, I didn’t cover the baby though just the top of my boob hanging out as I didn’t like the 2 top method! So I put the blanket in the strap of my top/bra to keep in place

That's interesting. My children are 22 and 24 and I'd never seen them until recently so assumed they were new!

Personally I think they draw attention to the fact that you are feeding. I just used to wear baggy tee shirts and pull them up on one side.

pbdr · 16/02/2022 10:40

My baby is my breastfeeding cover. Her head obscures anything from view. People seldom notice I'm breastfeeding and when they do they generally don't stare, or sometimes just give me a nice supportive smile.

StartingAfresh21 · 16/02/2022 10:47

Thanks for your comments. They were popular in Australia a few years ago. I personally never breastfed (i had problems) so I understand how it actually draws attention to you rather than misdirects attention.

I was also thinking that on hot days it would be too hot to be covered up in the heat.
