Do you really need to use cooled boiled water to make up 12-24 months formula??

I'm wondering why you have to if they can drink tap water at this stage and eat all sorts off the floor etc. Does anyone know if it's absolutely necessary?

Why are you still giving formula after 12 months?

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 22:45

And is it really better than giving them cow's milk if they're eating a normal diet??

OP posts:
colditz · 30/12/2007 22:46

At 12 to 24 months you don't need to give formula. I'd give tapwater, but not if it was going to be hanging around. Tap water heated in the microwave, made into formula and served immediately.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 22:46

I've just stopped breast feeding and for some reason we think it will be easier for a while.....on what basis I have no idea

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/12/2007 22:46

not necessary at all

MorocconOil · 30/12/2007 22:46

No. Give yourself a well earned break!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 22:47

no microwave here and she will drink milk at fridge temperature - I just need to know if it's necessary in terms of mystery bugs in the formula itself and not adding to the bioburdern

OP posts:
colditz · 30/12/2007 22:47

No it isn't better than giving them cows milk. not unless you're Nestle, in which case it is better for you to market formulas at older babies so you can make more money, rant foam froth.

Cows milk is fine, cheaper, fresher, AND nicer. Give a vit supplement if in doubt.

mosschops30 · 30/12/2007 22:47

ditto what everyone else says just hit the tap

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 22:48

om so fine to make up the formula with normal tap water then?

OP posts:
colditz · 30/12/2007 22:49

Sorry, not a rant at formula, just a rant at unnecessary products being marketed as needed. Like those stupid fucking Kandoo wipes.

colditz · 30/12/2007 22:49

baby is older than one, yes? Or have I misunderstood. Baby will need formula if significantly younger than one, but cows is fine for over one,.

mosschops30 · 30/12/2007 22:51

dont give the formula at all switch to cows milk, cheaper and easier

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 22:53

Mmm - it's more DH......plus DD (just turned one) is poorly at the mo and not eating at all and barely any milk so he's panicking that she's not getting any nutrients.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/12/2007 22:55

If she's poorly you could re-instate b/feeding for a while? It's the best thing really.

Otherwise cows milk just fine.

colditz · 30/12/2007 22:56

There is nothing in formula that isn't in a vitamin supplement that would be of any benefit to a toddler. And it tastes foul.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 30/12/2007 23:26

Thanks for all your replies - you are so reassuring!

What are kandoo wipes???

Ditto to the other posters who have said there's no need for formula at this age.

elliephant · 30/12/2007 23:46

My DD2 had follow on formula till she was nearly 2 - she's lactose intolerant and was poorly . Did use boiled water, filling clean bottles from kettle and leaving them to cool( or sticking the bottle in a pan of cold water if I was in a hurry) and then adding formula when needed- its no more hassle than making a cup of tea. Maybe tap, or bottled water low in salts if you were out, is ok if it was going to be used straight away but personally I wouldn't have been happy using them all the time until she was a bit older . Regarding formula in general , milk, both cow and goat, is a poor source of iron. Cows' milk contains only traces of iron and this iron is poorly absorbed - around 5%. Formula milk is fortified with iron at levels higher than those found in breast milk, so that the amount absorbed will be similar. This may be a factor if she is unwell and not eating etc.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/12/2007 23:50

elliephant - that's exactly what Nestle et al would have you believe, but, the whole fortified with iron thing is unproven and unfounded.

Nothing can come close to breastmilk - for iron or otherwise.

At a child this age - if they are not having milk as a main nourishment, they'll undoubtedly be having a varied diet supplying them with all the iron they need.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2007 23:52

Yes but elliephant, for a well one year old, that additional iron should come from their diet, not from artificially manufactured powder IMO.

I can see why the OP is concerned though, so in answer to the question I would always use boiled water with formula, especially if your DD is already unwell.

Twiglett · 30/12/2007 23:53

what's wrong with cow's milk? (or goats / soy if allergies)

honestly it's a marketing scam

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/12/2007 23:56

Nothing Twig, nothing at all.

But the formula companies would have you believe that there is a need for their product - elsewise, it wouldnt sell, would it?

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2007 23:58

I personally can't understand why anyone would willingly carry on faffing around with that stuff when there is no need. I stopped giving DS formula at 11 months, the same time as I stopped bottles. He doesn't drink much cow's milk either, FWIW, and touch wood he's very happy and healthy.
