Help! Anyone use Dr. Brown's bottles? LO with gas and vomiting milk up - desperate cry for help

Hi .,,..has anybody used or is using Dr. Brown's bottles? I have heard they are quite good for gassy babies, my LO is a week old and is a very gassy baby,,... she gulps the milk down very quickly and tends to vomit it up after, we are using Avent bottles but am thinking of buying some Dr Brown bottles today... she is in a cycle (has been like this for past 4-5 days) of waking up at 11pm for a feed and not settling down properly until 3 hours later.. she seems to gulp her milk down more during this first feed for the night which we think may contribute to her not settling and then she gets overtired which makes it even worse for both us and her... during the day it is better as she doesn't tend to gulp it down as quickly.
Please help!

Are you sure you have the right teat? Have a look at the ones you're using. How many holes in the top? Is there a number on the side(look closely!)

Try to feed her in as upright a position as is comfortable - don't have her lying flat on her back.

When you wind her, just sit her up and lean her forward and to the left. Or lay her along your arm, with her head at your elbow.

You could try a different sort of teat or bottle other than Dr Brown's. The disposable bottles (Avent, Playtex) are good for windy babies.

What formula are you using?

And the vomiting - does a little come back up when you're winding her, or is it much of the feed, and it's projectile?

Lazylou · 30/12/2007 13:31

DD was a gassy, refluxy baby and we tried all the formulas going, as well as bottles and we eventually had to use Dr Browns. They tend to be quite expensive but we found that DD was less gassy when we used them. The reflux thing lasted until she had a bad case of gastroentiritis at 8 months. We were on holiday and ran out of formula in the middle of the night, so we had to give her cows milk which she promptly threw up all over the place. Obviously at the time I didn't have a clue what I was doing, but it was the BEST thing we ever did because after that, DD was fine. In the end we put it down to an allergic reaction to all foods and formulas specifically for babies.

DD was under the hospital for the reflux and was on infant gaviscon for the entire time. We were given similar advice to Wanderingholly, with a particular emphasis on sitting DD up for an hour after feeds. As she couldn't sit up by herself, we had to resort to strapping her in the buggy and sitting her up that way.

The other thing we were told to try was Infacol for the wind thing, but I found this didn't work, so went through every conceivable colic remedy going until settling on Boots own stuff. It can be used from 1 month and smells like apple. It was quite a bit cheaper than the other stuff as well which helped.

I would definately get your lo checked out for reflux though because it is horrible and I reckon it contributed to the lack of sleep we had with DD, although past 8 months, I'm not sure what caused that!

I used them and ds was fine, they are expensive but I think they are worth it. I used dentionox for the wind, you add it too the milk - ds used to spit infacol out lol.

There are other bottles like DR browns out there, but I haven't used them so can't say if they're any good.

Nooname · 30/12/2007 13:39

Hi, we used Dr Browns as ds had colic and reflux and they did definitely help.
Good luck!!

DanJARMouse · 30/12/2007 13:40

Dr Browns are worth their weight in gold to me! Sorted DD2 out overnight!

Celery · 30/12/2007 13:43

I would also recommend the MAM ultivent bottles, I prefered these to the Dr. Browns, they were easier to fit together and worked well. Perhaps try both and see which ones you prefer?

oooggs · 30/12/2007 13:44

brilliant - used for ds1 and now for dts. Bought mine brand new off ebay as they were much much cheaper

DanJARMouse · 30/12/2007 15:47

Ivbe just got 6 on ebay for £7.99 inc postage, ok so not brand new, but ive got teats already.. DD2 is still using her bottles!

hazygirl · 30/12/2007 15:51

THEY ARE BRILL STOPPED SCREAMING BABY OVERNITEX

PEONY1318 · 30/12/2007 15:56

Hi everybody.,, thanks ... sent my husband promptly to Boots to get some Dr. Browns -

Thanks Mommalove !

Wandering Holly - answer to your questions -we are using Avent bottles with the teat with the one hole and using SMA (were using Aptamil but that made her worse for some strange reason)- midwife told us to feed her upright and to keep taking the bottle away from her after a couple of gulps so that she doesn't swallow that much air, but doesn't work because when the teat goes back into her mouth she gulps even quicker . The vomiting is only slight apparently not projectile in any case.

Hopefully Dr. Browns will do the job tonight fingers crossed - hubbie has been sent out again to get some Infacol. Midwife rang and says ok to get that for her.

Will keep everybody posted on outcome tomorrow!

Hi Mommalove ... turns out baby has reflux so doctor put her on carobel which has helped tremendously, she 's more settled now ... imagine driving to a&e on new years night... the emergency doctor was no help and told us to call in the morning as he was the only doctor on call, and she still wasn't settled by 3am in the monring - that's from 8.30pm!

But even though we've foudn the 'problem' she still seems to cry sometimes which is making me lose the plot abit... emotionally...

Peony, probably too late, but I have a bag of dr Browns bottles, and some new teats, that i can send you if you cover postage, some have hardly been used ( I bought them for dd2, but she was just a bit windy, rather than full on colic, which i had with dd1). I too found that sitting dd1 in bouncy chair to feed really helped - for some reason. Also we used colief and that seemed to help. If you'd like the bottles, then you can e-mail me your address and I'll stick them in the post for you. Hope things get better for you soon.

PEONY1318 · 04/01/2008 15:05

Hi Rudolpthehazeyjanedeer, thanks for the offer but as mentioned Dr. Browns dn't really make much difference as DD2 has reflux rather than colic! But thanks all the same!
