Getting baby to take Omeprazole

PL2021 · 21/01/2022 13:06

My 12 week old DD has been prescribed Omeprazole, but it's fair to say she doesnt like the taste much at all! It is the liquid version, does anyone have any tricks on how to get her to take it better please?

Also is it best to give it in the morning or before bed? I know it's supposed to be given on an empty stomach so maybe morning? But I also thought I could try and give it to her in a dummy syringe when she is drowsy of an evening in bed? Hmm not sure which to do

Any advice please? Smile

Needs to be first thing in the morning.
Use the syringe and put it to the side of her cheek. I used to do 0.5ml at a time then as time went on he would take the whole thing.
Extra positive expression- “medicine time! Nom nom” lots of praise and it will become a positive experience

I would give before breakfast.

Syringe inside of cheek.

Okay will do, thanks both!

Just picked up the prescription and they have instructed to give her 1.8ml once a day. However when she had it at 8 weeks old (we stopped it at the time due to severe constipation) she was on 2.8ml once a day, so they have decreased the dose. Does this sound right to you?

I would ring to double check, it goes off weight doesn't it?

PL2021 · 21/01/2022 16:02

@GrapefruitPink yeah as far as I'm aware it goes off weight, so I'm a bit confused as to why her dosage has been reduced even though she's grown! Hmm, may have to call them to check

Ds2 consultant told me to mix it with milk so I expressed enough for a feed over the day and dh gave him it in a bottle at night while I had a sleep.

Check the amount of actual omeprazole in it. The solution might just be different.

Give it 30 mins before milk or 1 hour after. That's super important. More info about omperzole and babies can be found on crying over spilt milk nz website. My gp told me nothing and only found out info from that website. They do get use to having it. My 3 month old is on liquid now 5ml and takes it ok. I use a calpol syringe as much better to get into smaller mouth than the normal 5ml syringe you get from chemist. I do little bit at a time and have a dummy on hand.
It can cause stomach pain as well the hospital ped told me.

shouldistop · 27/01/2022 20:24

@RedRuby26 the hospital paediatrician told me to add it to expressed breast milk. It worked for ds2.

Ask the pharmacist to check the dosage. They are brilliant at dealing with doctor incompetence.
(Too much experience)

My DD has a raspberry flavour added to hers which helped loads. She’s used to taking now and doesn’t make a fuss but she’s a lot older. I was told to give it at bedtime because she struggles most at night. I used to give it half at a time and give it slowly in bits half an hour apart.

I know this is an old post but commenting because I was frantically searching this a few weeks back. I got one of those Frida dummy/ syringes and was STUNNED at the difference! My DS was screaming the house down trying to take his liquid omeprazole, so badly he would pass out after it every day. And it was so horrible it was taking about 15 mins to give it to him. He actually screamed less getting his jabs and we had to give the omen daily!

The Frida dummy/syringe is an absolut game changer! used it today and he took the whole amount in less than a minute with NO crying!

Hope this helps someone else!
