Think I have messed everything up... :-(

Ds is nearly 8 months, bf with night-time bottle.

We have both been loaded with cold for the past few days, I went to the pharmasist on xmas eve, she gave me some day nurse which has made me feel loads better. Unfortunately I was looking at the packet this morning and it says DO NOT TAKE IF BREASTFEEDING. I have take almost a full packet (20 tablets). Anyways it may just be coincidence but ds hasnt fed at all today. I have lay down with him a couple of times and sat comfy but he just looks at me then bites.

I am so so sad that I have messed up like this, I'm really not ready to gove up feeding. I cant understand why he isnt interested, whether its cos of his cold (although he has been better today) or the tablets or something else.

Can someone please help?

hey GMM, it'll be fine, I've missed that long without feeding Joe, and I know Maveta went that long without feeding N while she was away, and still managed to get started again.
Maybe he's got the cold and that's made him not want to feed? Joe bit me for the first time this morning so maybe it's just the excitement getting to them?

Stay calm, you getting stressed won't make him want to feed as he'll pick up on it, spend some time cuddling him, maybe back to the babymoon thing?, then try again.

I would call GP if I were you, or NHS direct, it's probably fine but with one so young it's worth getting some advice. Don't worry, you haven't messed up, just get him checked out and carry on with the feeding, babies do go off their food if they have a cold. Have you tried offering plain, cooled boiled water? (in a bottle)

just orred that he doesnt seem interested - but maybe you are right - the living room is FULL of toys proper PFB moment!!

OTC medicines tend ot have this on a precaution. Did you mention b'fedign to pharmacist ? I'd say his behaviour is most likely coincidental, and more to do with the general disruption to routine and additional distractions at the time of year . Also at his age he may simply not need it so often. Keep offering and perhaps leave off the night bottle to see if it makes a difference.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 26/12/2007 17:21

PFB moment indeed

there you go then, that'll be your answer

Joe didn't feed between leaving home at 10am and 5pm yesterday

PillockOfTheCommunity · 26/12/2007 17:22

Maybe the Breastfeeding Drugline can help you.

BabiesEverywhere · 26/12/2007 18:30

Or is you want to talk about your baby not currently nursing try one (or all) of the following numbers

Breastfeeding Help Lines
National Childbirth Trust 0870 444 8708
La Leche League 0845 120 2918
Breastfeeding Network 0844 412 4664
Association for Breastfeeding Mothers 08444 122 949

halogen · 26/12/2007 19:46

Do remember that the reason that lots of medicines say "Do not take while breastfeeding" is that nobody in their right mind is going to volunteer for a controlled trial while breastfeeding just in case it does do something awful and therefore they have to tell you not to do it because it hasn't been tested. Chances are that it will be perfectly fine. My daughter often went off feeding when she had a cold as it was just difficult if her nose was blocked. If the feeding refusal carries on then call NHS Direct or your doctor, though, just to set your mind at rest.

geordiemacminxpie · 26/12/2007 19:55

Tried feeding him before he went to bed, he had a little go and then made a screwed up face, like I had given him a slice of lemon to suck on . I'm guessing that he doesnt like the taste of my milk at the moment - perhaps the tablets, or somthing I have eaten. Have expressed a wee bit off and will hopefully try again tomorrow.

OP posts:
LIZS · 26/12/2007 19:56

Are you expressing instead ?

PillockOfTheCommunity · 26/12/2007 19:57

good plan gmm, keep up your supply by expressing, hopefully he'll come round once it's out of your system

geordiemacminxpie · 26/12/2007 20:02

I managed to express..... wait for it..... drum roll..... AN OUNCE That was from both sides, in about half an hour...... Arghhhhhhhhh Still hopefully things will be better tomorrow

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 26/12/2007 20:02

Perhaps its just that he can taste a slight difference in your milk. Or could just be he is finding it hard to feed with his cold.
Found that with both DSs they fed/feed less when full of cold.
Express and dont panic, sure you will be ok.

Pannacotta · 26/12/2007 20:05

Some info here on kellymom www.kellymom.com/health/meds/cold-remedy.html

callmeoverchristmas · 26/12/2007 20:17

I was just about to suggest you read Kellymom! There is some theories that say cold remidies dry your Milk but I would think you can build the supply back up.

The main problem is probably his Cold so keep expressing. If you don't express regularly you might only get a little at a time, it is not an indication of how much he would be able to take.

geordiemacminxpie · 26/12/2007 20:22

thanks everyone
