Can I get mastitis from missing just one feed?

Yesterday I gave ds a bottle of ebm for his mid afternoon feed, I've never totally replaced a feed before, just used ebm as a top up. I did a late feed last night, a feed again at 5am and one this morning. All night I've felt very engorged, doesn't help that ds has a bit of a cold so he's not feeding brilliantly, but this morning my left boob feels bruised and there are red marks on it. Is this the start of mastitis? I've expressed after both feeds today as usual but making sure I empty the boob completely but it still feels a bit sore, not agony but definitely tender. I don't have any cracked nipples or any way for an infection to get in. Could it just be a blocked duct and can I just get rid of it with lots of bfing and using a hot water bottle on the affected side? Sorry, loads of questions, just don't want to be in agony over the next couple of days, it's bad enough that my mum has just broken her arm and can't do the lunch tomorrow, I need to be able to do the lunch!!

It sounds like a blocked duct at the moment , which could turn into mastitis especially if you are tired /run down. Bf loads from that side, massaging towards the nipple as you do. (but be careful not to let the other side get engorged). Bf in different positions as well - rugby hold/lying down etc.

ANd run hot water over it.

Hopefully you've caught it early enough.

I'm not an expert so bumping for you. I had mastitis this time last year and was feeding on demand so I guess it's possible. Are you feeling fluey?

Hi jinglebelgo and gingerninja.. no fluey symptoms yet so I'm hoping it's just a blocked duct at the moment. It does feel sore, but I'm pretty sure I'm empty the breast each time I feed, just did a feed and tried expressing afterwards to see what came out and nothing did so I guess that means it's empty.Ds has a pretty bad habit of staying on the nipple long after the breast has emptied so sometimes it's hard to tell unless he's really hungry and desperate for the other one. I can't feel a lump or anything, I thought I would if it was a blocked duct, but I'm going to try a hot water bottle anyway. Should I do it just before a feed?
