Formula tips

New mum here!

How do you all make up formula bottles. Surely you can't follow the instructions on the packet, boil, wait 30 mins then use?? I can't predict when my baby will want next bottle. Can I fill a few up with water and leave in fridge (without powder in)?

Thoughts?

I know they aren't always popular but the perfect prep machine was a lifesaver for my second. They weren't a thing with my first, but I used to do a similar thing myself. A bit of boiled water in the bottle with a splash of cooled boiled water (so it wasn't scorching hot) up to 2oz (for example) mix in the powder, then top up to required amount. I would have that measured out in a separate bottle to make sure there was the right amount of water.

When they were really small the ready made bottles you can buy are good but expensive as a long term option.

In the real world people either do perfect prep (either the machine or replicating it) or else they make up bottles with boiling water and cool quickly then put in the fridge.

You can't both feed on demand and follow a method involving so much waiting.

What is a perfect prep machine? How does it work? Thank you!

There's no point filling bottles with boiled water just to cool it in the fridge. It's not the water you are sterilising, it's the powder. So the powder must come into contact with 70' water.

You can make up formula as ddirected and rapidly cool it and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours then warm iit in a bottle warmer?

Hi OP, PP is right the point of the boiling water is to kill bacteria in the powder.

I just make 6 in advance.

Boil the kettle, wait 20 mins then give them a shake. Cool them down in some cold water in the sink. I then pop them in the fridge then take out and warm as needed. Always use within 24 hours of making.

Both babies have never had a tummy bug or anything like that. I also make sure if it isn't drank in an hour it's discarded.

I've heard mixed reviews of the Perfect Prep machine but I'm sure it's fine if cleaned/serviced regularly.

I think your best options are:

Making them in advance

Using a PP machine

Making a fresh one when required/anticipated.

Yea as PP said you need to add powder to hot water to sterilise it but waiting 30 mins is impossible. I used to boil water and put it in the fridge in a spare bottle to cool the hot water quickly.

So to make up an 8oz bottle for example
4oz boiling water in a bottle
Add enough powder for 8oz bottle
Add in 4oz of cold boiled water (measured from the cold bottle, not the one with the powder in as volume changed)

This made the bottle drinking temp immediately and was very quick.
