I know you should do the 2-3am feed to keep your supply going so what happens when they start sleeping through??

My HV said that if they sleep through to let them, but feed more during the day.... not sure how practical that is with you and callum though mate?!

Unfitmother · 22/12/2007 12:57

Nonsense! DS slept through from 12 days, DD slept through from 11 - 6 from 6 weeks and both BF sucessfully for over a year.
You supply what they need. Don't stress about it, just enjoy it!

gwynniestwin · 22/12/2007 12:58

No, your body will adjust, don't worry. You may find that your boobs feel large and engorged the first few days, but this will settle. Enjoy the extra sleep!

sparklygothkat · 22/12/2007 12:59

oh yes, my boobs are sore, when I wake up, I wake him to give an extra feed in the morning at 8am.

yes one of mine slept 7-7 within the first few weeks fully bf until 11 months and donated expressed milk!

Magrat · 22/12/2007 13:02

your body is a wonderful thing .. if you're uncomfortable I'd give him a dream feed .. if not then just let him sleep

how is his weight gain now? do you need to wake him to keep him feeding more regularly?

sparklygothkat · 22/12/2007 13:02

TBH I am grateful for the extra sleep, its been a long 3 months of 3 hourly feeds.. [tired]

He is 7lb 13oz now, he is gaining between 9-12oz a week..

Please don't tell sparklygothcat this is nonsense....it absolutely is not in her case.

Sparkly, it may not be good for Callum to sleep this length of time, sorry. If he was an older baby and one who had had no problems, and you had not already had a struggle with supply and his weight gain, then we would not worry.

6 hours between feeds is a long time, and this will not support your efforts to build up and maintain a good supply....the worry with small babies is that they sleep to conserve energy.

It will almost certainly have an effect on your supply....in some cases this does not matter, but in your case, it does.

DanJARMouse · 22/12/2007 13:07

I dont believe I said any such nonsence

Magrat · 22/12/2007 13:07

he's still quite small isn't he? But good to see a steady weight gain.

I do think I'd dream feed him to be honest

sorry, I know you must be exhausted

CarGirl · 22/12/2007 13:09

Gosh I forgot he is still so little. Could you express at the 3am feed for a week then get him weighed to ensure he is still maintaining his weight gain.

sparklygothkat · 22/12/2007 13:09

ok, he has only done it twice, will set an alarm and dream feed him. I thought that I needed to do the extra feed

tiktok · 22/12/2007 13:09

You didn't, Jarm, but unfitmother did!

SGK - is it really 9-12 oz a week?

tiktok · 22/12/2007 13:10

Even if his weight gain is this much, it's still too soon (IMO) to assume all is well after all the hassle you have had - babies of this age, and this weight, usually do wake.

sparklygothkat · 22/12/2007 13:10

yes, this week it was 10oz, last week 12oz and the week before 9oz.

OP posts:
DanJARMouse · 22/12/2007 13:11

daniel is 3 weeks old, 9lbs exactly and still wakes at 3am

ib · 22/12/2007 13:13

Sorry sgk, but when ds was ftt and slept through it was bad for him and for my supply - I think he was probably sleeping to conserve energy as he was so weak. In the end I had to set an alarm for myself every 3 hours and feed him. I know it's hard when you need the sleep so badly [very sympathetic]

ib · 22/12/2007 13:16

I type so slowly you've already decided by the time I post lol (one fingered typing with ds feeding!)

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 22/12/2007 13:21

It just shows how what age/weight baby you've had colours your experience. I've had three babies born after 40 weeks and for them supply/waking issues have never arisen - therefore I would have said 'oh let them sleep' - but for babies who start off so much smaller - it's a different world isn't it? What's sound advice for one could be actually dangerous for the other.
Anyway - that's great news on the weight gain SGK - Go Callum!

sparklygothkat · 22/12/2007 13:23

i will keep at it, even if i am silly with tireness...
