'clicking' noise while feeding??

ara · 21/12/2007 14:21

my 12 day old DD has started making a hard sucking noise while feeding - has anyone else experienced this?
She cried and kicked her legs with frustration yesterday when it happened and i'm assuming this means our latch is not quite right?
It almost seems like she's so desperate to feed (she's a very humgry girl!) she can'r get it quickly enough!
Any advice or eperience much appreciated!

Ok. It might be that she is gulping great mouthfuls of milk, that would be the clicking noise - the kicking etc is possibly that she is finding it comes at her a bit fast, and is struggling not to choke? Else maybe she has wind, needs to have a burp before taking any more...my feeling would be the former though, it is just coming very fast!
Take her off for a moment to regain her composure, then try again if she wants. Don't worry, it will calm down over the coming weeks.

Latch sounds fine btw

I might be wrong, but does any of that sound like a possibility?

Sorry I may have misinterpreted. It depends what kind of clicking, sometimes there is a clicking which means there's an air gap between nipple and mouth = not good, but easily remedied.
If it is more like a gulping-clicking noise, that is what I was on about and is fine.

Hard to tell without being there! Could someone check our latch, maybe a HV?

her bottom lip is curled, and she does seem to be taking a decent mouthful but i'm slightly worried it's maybe not quite enough - i tried disengaging her during the last feed when it started happening and re-attached her a couple of times till it stopped and she had a lovely peaceful feed like normal.

My HV thought she was having a little growth spurt yesterday so perhaps that has something to do with it - she seems really panicked when trying to latch on jut over the last 2 days - as though she's starving hungry and just doesn't have the time to waste to open her mouth wide enough ! She's like a little truffle hunter!

B produced a clicking type noise when feeding when v small - and still does occasionally - she is 8 mths now. I thought something was wrong with the latch - but couldn't see or feel anything wrong - got latch checked and no issue. She always fed very happily and in the end I concluded it was just a random 'thing' for us. Sorry - this isn't much help - but it maybe that you never get totally to the bottom of it...

try some very small adjustments to the angle of her head in relation to your breast, make sure she is 'spine in line' and doesnt have her chin tucked too far in.

Ara, I second wot everyone else said. My DS clicks when he's latched too 'shallow' ie is sucking a bit more than gaping... i worked out it was the air getting into the corners of his mouth and breaking the suction slightly. I worked on the latch by waiting patiently for him to open wider (and maybe the fact your girl is desperate at the mo means she's impatient to get on ...) and then 'hinging' him on, bottom lip first then slight tipping of head forward... Not too much though since you don't want head tilted forward either...

But yes, if it carries on I'd get an expert to look...

Thanks everyone I will try repositioning her during the next feed - i've had really painful stitches from an episiotomy so have been feeding lying down since the birth as it's been too sore to sit! So I suppose we're just getting into the rhythm of a new position too.

Where will i find a proper BF counsellor? Presumably through the HV?

My midwife did suggest expressing a tiny bit to me as my boobs are massive - could this be confusing her?

monkey - thanks - DP and i were having a close look earlier and thought this might be the case. How long did it take you to sort it out?

Clicking could be a sign of tongue tie - which could be affecting the latch. Agree a properly qualified bfc is your best bet.
If it were tongue tie (and it's only one option that I'm mentioning because nobody has so far!) it is easily fixed.

i had a clicker, due to excessive milk production. she didn't have to bother latching & sucking properly as the milk was just pouring out. i had to reposition her with every click. she soon stopped. i got help from bfn btw.

OP says 'sucking', I apologise for confusing the issue in saying 'clicking' in my response.
