Baby gaining too much??

Bel1991 · 27/12/2021 22:22

Hi everyone
My 7 week old baby boy was born 4.2kg and is exclusively breastfed. He is currently weighing 6.5kg, gaining 2.3 since birth in total.

I feed on demand, he wakes for feeds regularly (started around every 2 hours but now is around 3-4 most of the time)

He never lost his birth weight and has since been continuing to pack on the weight.
At our last checkup I was told to keep an eye on his weight and go back in for another checkup if he is gaining more than 200grams per week.

This week he has gained 350grams and I'm freaking out that it's way too much and could indicate a problem

Does anyone else have any experience with a big baby gaining lots of weight quickly? Please share! Confused

I dont see how you can overfeed a breastfed baby and you certainly wouldn't withhold feeds from a baby of that age

Bel1991 · 27/12/2021 22:26

You're right- I certainly wouldn't withhold feeds and I don't believe he is over fed.
Just wondering about other peoples experience of the big weight gains Smile

You can't overfeed your BF baby.

However, if you're concerned, talk to your health visitor or GP.

My first was like this. Now a lanky teenager. Wouldn't worry about it!

Magissa · 27/12/2021 22:33

My three were all exclusively bf. All kept their birthweight and put on at every weigh in. They were big healthy looking babies. Never been overweight as children and all three are now adults in the normal weight range! You can't overfeed bf babies. Carry on!

My first git so fat it was like he was a ball! Then he started walking and running and it all disappeared!

They can, in the early weeks go up or down and find a new centile and stay there.

My DD was born on a high centile and settled at about the 50th after a few weeks. She's a teen and is still in that centile now. You DS will probably settle on a new centile soon Smile

How many gits have you had @Morechocmorechoc Grin

By the way the NHS say that bf babies can't be over fed.
I have had three children but have zero experience of formula feeding so couldn't advise. Maybe your health visitor has more experience of formula fed babies over breastfed?

DockOTheBay · 27/12/2021 22:39

While I agree that you can't overfeeding a breastfed baby, that does seem like a large weight increase and puts him above the 99th centile which would be unusual. It might be worth mentioning to the health visitor so that they can refer you rule out any underlying disorders which could cause this. I would not cut down on feeds though, until you have spoken to a proper professional (NOT just the health visitor)

Magissa · 27/12/2021 22:40

I say health visitor but re read your post

Magissa · 27/12/2021 22:40

And see it was the person weighing who said that....

Bel1991 · 27/12/2021 22:42

Thankyou! This is good to hear!
I just needed to hear something reassuring to get me through to our next appointment Smile

OP, just to check, you didn't suffer from gestational diabetes in pregnancy?

Bel1991 · 27/12/2021 22:56

@PurplePansy05

OP, just to check, you didn't suffer from gestational diabetes in pregnancy?
I did have gestational diabetes, I controlled with diet and insulin. I had trouble keeping my fasting sugar levels in Check until the week I had him. They checked him after birth and Behring was fine with him

OK, as long as he (after birth) and yourself (between 6 and 13 weeks post partum) had your glucose levels checked and stable that's all good. I too had GD and from what I understand, unless glucose is stable for both of you it could lead to either slow or fast weight gain but in your case it seems this shouldn't be an issue and he just likes his milk Smile

My partner just reminded my that I weighed him with his nappy on (modern clothes nappy) compared to him being weighed naked at the clinic..
I weighed the nappy separately and it was 180grams on its own.
Sleep deprivation is getting me hard Grin
I need to remember not to stress about everything Confused
Thanks to everyone who answered Smile
