Dummy for 1 week old breastfed baby

I know you’re not supposed to use a dummy in a breastfed baby until 6 weeks because of nipple confusion...however I’d like to hear people’s experiences with this? I have a 1 week old who is liking being on the boob 24/7, she’s feeding and gaining well but likes to comfort suck for 2 mins then fall back to sleep. This was fine with my first daughter but As I now also have a toddler I thought a dummy may help me out her down a little bit more to play with toddler..toddler also still cosleeps with us so thought it would help settle her at night. I don’t want to mess with supply though...if I use sparingly and only after a long feed should this be ok?

Never a good idea to use a dummy. What may be sparing at the start may become much more. I always feel sorry for small babes who grow up thinking a dummy is a necessary part of life.

@Roo8765 ignore Guccibear. I was in your position and made sure my newborn took a dummy. Keep persevering. It didn't affect my supply.

I didn’t use a dummy with my first but have with my second, it’s made life much easier. DC2 is happy to have his dummy and lie on his own which gives me so much more time. They are much more relaxed too. I didn’t introduce it until a few weeks in but it hasn’t caused any issues with feeding.

I think nipple confusion is an old myth. Just be careful if using a dummy you don’t miss the hungry signs.

We introduced a dummy pretty much straight away with DC2. Only super sparingly, basically initially only when I was not able to stick him on the breast and he was crying e.g. car seat, nappy change, clothes change etc. He also started having a couple of bottles a week from being 2 weeks old so sometimes used dummy to settle him to sleep after a bottle. He's 2 months now and we still use it sparingly but I do use a bit more often now that I'm confident I have a steady, settled supply and my baby is growing well. For example I will use it if baby is still unsettled after he's finished feeding on both sides or if he's clearly trying to sleep and his last feed was less than 2hrs ago. Im a big dummy fan through experience with DC1.
