is it a good idea to freeze some ebm in the freezer trays? dd is almost 6 months and im thinking about what im going to do when weaning her

yes dd is almost 6 months. i was thinking of freezing some ebm in the ak freezr trays so that i can use it in her food/rice.
this is my first baby so im a bit clueless

but if i freeze it in 15ml batches will there be too much air in each cube pocket, will that ruin the milk ?
i know with the ebm bags you have to squeeze as much milk out as poss?

i thought i might be easier to use ebm in her food

what do you think?

not sure what you mean about squeezing the bags - I froze 1 & 2 oz bags of EBM for food mixing didn't try the cube trays so can't help with tips on that - Sorry!

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 11:12

sorry i ment to say that you have to squeeze as much air as possible out of the ebm freezer bags

think it is ok to use cows milk in cooking for over 6 mths
well I did...
could enver express anough to make a good cheese sauce

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 13:23

on the baby rice it says to use bm or formula

does everyone use cows milk then ?

no need for babyrice or mixing milk with food or any of that business. serve normal food and breastfeed as normal. no need at all for special arrangements, expressing, freezing etc. keep it simple.

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 17/12/2007 13:30

i froze ebm in pouches for drinking whilst weaning.

never used baby rice ds just spat it out and I pureed but got him onto lumps etc very early.

NineUnlovelyTinselDecorations · 17/12/2007 13:31

I agree with ruddynorah, no need for all that faff at 6 months (it's one of the benefits of waiting until 6 months that you can give normal food). If you want to make cheese sauce etc then you can use cow's milk.

If you do go down the expressing and storing in 15ml portions I guarantee you will be looking back in a year's time and wondering why you were so barmy

missorinoco · 17/12/2007 13:34

i used ebm for baby rice, but that was b4 6 months. did find mixing foods he wasn't sure about with ebm made them go down easier. think it was the familiar taste.

would be a serious amount of milking to fill an ak freezer cube! i used the bags and sqeezed out the air. that worked well.

would recommend cows milk for cooking. much easier. found i was much more chilled about ds declining my offerings if i hadn't pumped away to produce them

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 14:01

what do mean by normal foods?

sorry as i said 1st time clueless mum, know me im prob making hard work 4myself

ruddynorah · 17/12/2007 14:06

here

and here

no need to puree from 6 months. no need for anything special at all.

TheIceQueen · 17/12/2007 14:07

so cows milk is ok cooked - but I committed a major c*ck up by unwittingly making DS3 some Wheetabix the other morning and putting cows milk in it didn't I

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 14:20

thanks ruddy im off to look at those now

everyone has told me to give babyrice as a 1st food, do you think baby rice isnt really anygood ? is it really for early weaners ?

OP posts:
mears · 17/12/2007 14:22

I would not bother with baby rice. When I weaned if I needed milk to mix with food I just hand expressed straight into the dish

NineUnlovelyTinselDecorations · 17/12/2007 14:23

No no TheIceQueen, it's fine cold too in food - only you aren't supposed to give it as a drink before 12m.

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 14:24

ive tried hand expressing but nothing comes out. grrr that would def be easier

mears · 17/12/2007 14:30

Practice makes perfect - if baby can get it out so can you. With your thumb on top and first 2 fingers below, start at the nipple and feel your way backwards till you feel a different texture. Some women feel pea like swellings. Compress the breast between your thumb and fingers till the milk lets down. As the milk slows, rotate your fingers and themb to another part like going round a clock face. Start with thumb at 12 o'clock and fingers at 6. Then change to 3 and 9 o'clock.

Usually the resevoirs of milk can be felt under the area where the dark edge of the areola meets the breast.

The trick is not to let your fingers and thumb slide towards the nipple. HTH.

TheIceQueen · 17/12/2007 14:34

phew thank goodness for that - I just went to autopilot doing breakfast LOL.

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 14:53

thankyou for that mears im gonna try that tonight after my bath

OP posts:
mears · 17/12/2007 15:22

Best place to practice is in the bath. Remember nothing will come out initially - it is only once the milk 'lets down' that it will start to come in jets.

Remember to report back

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 15:33

i will

hmm wonder if thats where ive ben going wrong with hand expressing, not doing it for long enough

ill report back later
