Hello, I am currently pregnant but collecting things for baby especially as baby is due around Christmas and if she comes early shops won't be open!

I was wondering which of these is best, I am hoping to combination feed.

Other brands are welcomed, I just thought this brand as it's the one I see most at the shops.

I used aptimel 1 and then moved to apitmel 2 at 6 months. Daughter took to it well.

confusedlots · 30/11/2021 13:02

I used aptamil with my first (just the standard one) and it was fine. I heard a few people saw that cow and gate is essentially the same as aptamil (same manufacturer, same ingredients) but cheaper so I gave it a go with my second and no problems at all.

I would advise not to stock up with loads at the start just in case your baby doesn't tolerate the one you've bought, 2 tins should be enough to get started, it's expensive stuff to waste. And it's usually best to pick a common brand that you can get in most supermarkets/corner shops, nothing worse than realising you're running low and there's nowhere close by to get more!

I think sensavia is being discontinued, and even before it’s wasn’t as widely available, so I definitely wouldn’t choose that. If you’re determined to choose Aptamil then I’d start with the bog standard Aptamil 1 since it’s cheaper and see how baby goes on it. Mine both had Hipp Organic and no complaints at all.

Go with what's available in your nearest shop for the time you inevitably run out. I used cow and gate for this reason and also because they did the pre made bottles for out and about. Plus it was marginally cheaper.

MondayYogurt · 30/11/2021 14:54

Hipp Organic worked perfectly.

gogohm · 30/11/2021 14:59

What is your local supermarket? Buy what you can easily source and can afford, but it's so expensive, I would try to feed yourself for as much as possible

Absolutely this - what is in your local late night corner shop/petrol station/24h supermarket.

I've heard good things about the Aldi one, but if you go for a name brand like Aptamil/Hipp/Cow&Gate, more places will stock it. Having one that does a ready made version also makes life easier.

Depending on how/when you plan to introduce formula, the starter packs of premade bottles with the sterile teats included can be a useful place to start rather than powder.

I combi fed 2 DC using Cow & Gate with no issues.

Dspx · 30/11/2021 15:02

A really good piece of advice I got, was to go to the nearest shop and see what brand they stock then if you are ever caught short you can grab some form the closet place. X

MarigoldMoonStone · 30/11/2021 15:06

Get one stocked by your local shop and don’t buy lots to start with because it might not agree with your baby and you will have to try another one. If combination feeding I think you will need to mostly breastfeed/express at the start anyway to establish a supply.

shenanigans5 · 30/11/2021 15:07

They’re all the same. Buy the one stocked in your closest co-op or whatever.

cruffin · 30/11/2021 15:09

Go for the cheapest one.

Fritilleries · 30/11/2021 15:15

There is literally no difference between them. I stuck with first milk right up until my LO was 18 months as it's basically the same thing as follow on. More importantly, if you're looking to combination feed then you'll be breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 weeks until your supply settles itself.

There's no reason to pay 3 quid more for Aptamil when Cow&Gate is made on the exact same line, filled in the exact same box with a different label slapped on. Also, if you can't find one of them, you can always switch to the other without fear that your baby might taste a difference because there isn't any.

Ah I didn't know this!! This is why I'm thankful for MN! Thank you

I live in a tiny village where the corner shop doesn't do formula so the nearest shops are Aldi and a Tesco, I guess I'll have to check Amazon also! I was tempted by Kendamil but only boots does that so think I am going to steer clear of that one. (Even though it looks really good!)

We use Kendamil and I can't recommend it enough. We use the subscribe and save on their website as nowhere near us stock it and it's a lifesaver. It's delivered to your door and you can amend how many tubs you get to suit you.

mummyof2littleones · 30/11/2021 17:38

But if Kendamil is what you were thinking of using, Tesco is a stockist as well as Morrison's 😊

I’d only buy one or two tins at first, in case your baby doesn’t get on with it then you can switch easily enough.

Yes, all infant formulas are nutritionally the same due to regulations, but there are small differences in recipe that mean sensitive babies might suit one brand over another, e.g. palm oil vs no palm oil, whole milk vs skimmed.

FWIW my refluxy eldest projectiled Cow and Gate and a variety of hypoallergenic milks, but was ok on HiPP and strong reflux meds. Milk refusing youngest wouldn’t drink HiPP (I swear it now smells fishy, where it didn’t used to), Aptamil, Kendamil Classic but will take a small amount of goat formula.

Out of my FF friends, one got on well with Aptamil from birth, and one preferred the ProFutura.

Sidneysussex · 30/11/2021 19:16

Buy first milk. You absolutely do not need the follow on formula s they are basically a way of making money. Also the only legal way the company s can advertise. First milk until they are one then cow's milk.
But try just sticking to breast milk it's cheeper and much better for your baby.
