tongue-tie: snip or nipple shields?

My SIL gave birth a week ago, and has very sore nipples. They often hurt throughout feeding, and SIL is starting to dread bf. They saw a breast-feeding consultant who diagnosed a mild case of tongue-tie (which the grandfather and uncle of my niece also have). The breast-feeding consultant suggested to snip the tongue-tie. SIL is very concerned about this. They talked to their paediatrician (they are in the US), who suggested that frenotomies are outdated, and nipple shields would solve the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Sanquine you should find your supply improves because the baby is able to latch on properly and empty the breast better. I was the same as you either feeding or pumping it was not much fun at all, after having the tt done I literally did nothing but feed and lots of skin to skin contact for a few days. I was lucky tt was done on the friday so spent most of the weekend in bed, and it did help a lot.

Its quite sad that there are many midwives who dont know about tt or actually even look for it, I had not heard of it on any of the bf training days I went on, and it is actually quite a common problem.
