Tips and techniques for getting wind up - bf 4 week old baby

Holymoly321 · 15/12/2007 20:51

DS2 is 4 weeks and breast fed. He's started to get very distressed after his (short) feeds and it feels like he's got wind, but non amount of back pattig and rubbing is bringing it up. Can anyone suggest other techniques for getting a baby's wind up? We are desperate.

Here is a good link:

And this is a mumsnetter's page which we found helpful:

hello ive een in the same boat as you with my ds2...now 12 weeks. Quite unsettled after feeding and really hard to get a burp up. His favourite position to be held is with me standing up and holding him over my left arm on his tummy....its hard to explain but my forearm goes between his arms and i hold him between his legs with my hand...his head sort of rests on my arm. I can swing or jiggle him like this plus rub his back with my other hand....it doesnt always get the wind up but does seem to soothe him.

For no obvious reason he does seem a bit more settled after most feeds these last couple of weeks so im hoping he is growing out of it. I also used infacol which i think helped though it seemed to ease it out the other end rather than produce lots of burps.

also try lying face down across knees for a bit then sitting as upright as possible with your hand under chin. Extend the back (by lifting chin/head upwards and patting/pushing spine to straighten it - gently ov...)

if this doesn't work hold them tilted so they're leaning to their left side slightly and pat their back slightly to the left also IYSWIM.

Try it on yourself - if you've a burp you need up, lying or tilting to your left will help it up somewhat!

But sometimes it just can't be done but keep experimenting. Only if they seem in discomfort though - not worth doing just for a burp's sake IMHO...

The over the knees position worked for my DD as well as stroking her head, which I could never understand, but it worked sometimes

I used to try to wind my dd for ages, and kept putting her in different positions to do so. She's 6 months now so she doesn't really need it, but I used to sit her up, on my knee, after a feed and rub her back, then put her over my shoulder. If she was taking ages to burp, I would lie her on her back, across my knee and rub her tummy for a bit, then go back to rubbing her back. Putting the baby on your shoulder is quite a good way, as the pressure of your shoulder against their tummy helps the wind to come up. Infacol is brilliant aswell. Used it before every feed with dd and she would burp as soon as I sat her up! HTH

The winding position that worked best for DD3 was being held upright with her head and arms (arms pointing up a bit) over my shoulder, and gently rubbing her back.

my MW suggested when my DD was a couple of weeks old (i was BF also)to put the palm of your hand on the back of the babys head and gently stroke in a clockwise direction!!it worked a treat!! also try colief drops which you can buy in chemists (we got ours in a lloyds chemist) as it helps to breakdown the lactose in the milk to aid digestion which helps with wind pain also iyswim!!

My ds3 was the same, and my friend recommended holding him upright and gently patting the left side of his back. Apparently it's in the Baby Whisperer book. And it worked a treat. He's now 8 months and non-windy.

Ifacol works when dd is having a bad night, walking up and down stairs works well too.

5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 16/12/2007 12:34

I forgot about the stairs Islamum - nice one! We used to despair with thrashing baby for ages with a bubble we could hear sloshing around, then we'd take him up or downstairs for something and then - UUUURP! - a giant, mansize burp would come up and threaten to wake the neighbourhood...

WanderingTrolley · 16/12/2007 12:41

I sit babies forward and to their left. Don't bother with the patting.

Different things work for different babies.

Try them all!
