Newborn intolerance

Hi all my 9 week old baby has been having a lot of tummy issues. He's never happy when awake. Cries during & after every feed ... watery & mucusy stools ... etc.
Our gp thinks it might be an intolerance since he was on antibiotics for 7 days when he was 2 weeks old.
We have been referred further.
I'm just wondering how long do you think it'll take until we get an appointment? As it's getting really hard to look after a grumpy newborn 😞 and might consider going private.

Is GP suggesting cmpa? If so a referral at this age won't do much. The only thing you can do in is cut out dairy (and soya) from your diet of bf or request a non dairy formula if ff. Once you've done that you should see an improvement over a few weeks. There are some good Facebook groups you can join to help you.

He said he's not sure what it could be. I've cut out dairy and gluten 2 weeks ago but no improvement so far 😅 might have to try formula and see if it'll help

You don't have to switch to formula, and it can make things a lot worse as it's direct dairy protein (rather than filtered through you). You can if you want but don't feel pressured. The most likely culprits are dairy and soya, then egg in that order. So I'd eat gluten but cut dairy and soya and wait a few weeks because although the proteins are out of your milk within a few hours, the symptoms can take weeks to resolve. I would join the cmpa breastfeeding Facebook group for support and advice.

With those symptoms I would also get a proper lactation consultant (not a midwife, gp or hv) to assess for tongue tie, latch and whether you have oversupply or a fast letdown which can also cause these things.

It's tough now but it's very likely if you get these things checked it will calm down.

You should ask to have his stools tested for presence of potential pathogens as well as testing for allergies.

What was he on antibiotics for?

Once you get the results of these tests, probiotics might help rebuild his gut biome. The antibiotics will have impacted this. Biogaia Infant drops are recommended here (not UK) after antibiotics. You could also start this straight away, but you might want to check with the GP first.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone
I will definitely join the Facebook group I didn't know there was one.
Spoke to the gp and he says it's colic. I'm 100% sure it's not 😩
