Can I have a chicken tikka masala or would the baby taste it in my milk?

REally fancy a takeaway tonight, but won't if it's going to really taint my breast milk...

what if it does?

sparklyjen · 13/12/2007 15:03

I ate tons of curry while pregnant and breastfeeding and it never put ds off. He probably had become accustomed to it though.

chibi · 13/12/2007 15:04

there's only one way to know for sure! DO IT!

santagitta · 13/12/2007 15:08

It might enhance it, rather than 'taint' it. Why deny LO the chance of a curry?

ChubbyStuckForAFestiveNameBurd · 13/12/2007 15:10

That's one of the best things about BFing - they get used to a variety of tastes.

Mine's a bhuna ... mmmmmmm

chibi · 13/12/2007 15:12

i fancy a curry myself now

whomovedmychocolate · 13/12/2007 15:13

I ate curry all the way through pregnancy and post partum and DD loves spicy foods. Go for it.

dal21 · 13/12/2007 15:23

they reckon the more varied foods you eat during pregnancy and labour...the more your dc may like a wide variety of foods when being weaned as they are used to the flavour from your bm......i have no idea if true, but see no reason why you shouldnt eat a nice curry. enjoy!

dal21 · 13/12/2007 15:24

pregnancy and bfeeding even. LOL!

tiktok · 13/12/2007 15:26

smiling, there may be an effect on your milk's taste, but that wouldn't be a problem, would it?

PortAndLemonaid · 13/12/2007 15:40

You clearly don't feel the taste of curry is a taint, so why should your baby? One of the advantages of breastfeeding is that the baby gets exposed to a range of tastes early on.

Holymoly321 · 13/12/2007 15:58

Fantastic! I'm putting in my order right now!

Good God,you can eat and drink what you like woman.
Life would be intolerable otherwise.

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 13/12/2007 16:10

i ate curry and chilli beef when bfing ds.....dh was on nappy duty for the ones after that and they were particularly delightful

on the plus side ds loves well flavoured foods - wouldn't touch any bland stuff when starting weaning!

mines a lamb sag

mylovelymonster · 13/12/2007 16:14

Eat what you like..........and as much of it as you like, partik cake. Thank heavens for BFing ) DH off for blokey curry tonight and mine's lined up in the fridge.

Tanee58 · 13/12/2007 16:17

I read recently that it's recommended that mothers eat broccoli, sprouts etc because it'll accustom babies to the taste. That was in utero, but I'm sure it applies to breastfeeding also. I ate all sorts, never put dd off - she carried on feeding for years!!!!!

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 13/12/2007 16:50

we eat a lot of very spicy food in our house and I've never had a problem with bm. Sometimes the nappies got a bit worse, but other than that!

MerryLittleCarrotmas · 13/12/2007 16:58

I'm pretty sure gazillions of bf mothers in India outstrip us in the curried bmilk stakes.

Really fancy a chicken tikka makhani now...peshwari naan, mmmmmmmmmmmm....

P.S. Many curries contain stuff like fenugreek and other spices which reputedly help increase milk production. Yay!

You owe it to your baby to have that curry, godammit!

NineBabiesDancing · 13/12/2007 22:31

Mmmm, I could kill a chicken korma with garlic nan

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 13/12/2007 22:37

Sorry to be contrary - but when I was breastfeeding ds1, I made a curry for us. Lots of garlic and chilli (as we both like it). DS1 was in such pain afterwards that I had to call out the doctor.

Our doctor is an Indian lady, and she told me to avoid curry - she said that 'even I don't eat curry when I'm breastfeeding!'

You may find that you don't have any problems, but just in case!

5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 14/12/2007 11:07

trial and error? I didn't worry at all about eating stuff when BF and my kids list highly spiced and begarlicked lentil dhal with rice as among their all time favourites now...

dividedselfridgesxmaswindow · 14/12/2007 11:09

Seriously, can you flavour your milk?

I never knew that. I guess if you can flavour semen then anything is possible.

MerryPIFFLEmas · 14/12/2007 11:10

I cook serious homemade curries 3-5 x a week, with lentils and/or meat
DS2 seems blissfully happy with it

ChubbyStuckForAFestiveNameBurd · 14/12/2007 11:17

Honestly I got myself in such a state trying to avoid everything 'in case it upset baby', I was surviving on air and water! Once I decided to jack that nonsense in and ate what I liked (inc curry, chilli, fruit, pulses etc) I was happier and baby no different. OJ does seem to make him farty but even that's hard to prove with certainty. Coincidence is to blame for a lot of these foods being apparently hard on baby, IMO.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 14/12/2007 11:28

I ate curry the day I came home from hospital, and almost everyday for months afterwards, it was like a weird craving I got towards the very end of pregnancy that lasted the first few months.
I breastfed and never had a problem.
DS does like curry now though
