STOP BREASTFEEDING AT 6 MONTHS says my dentist. 'You're luck your dd hasn't got rotting teeth', she says.

She admitted this view is unpopular but after 6 mths there is a risk to the teeth. I only mentioned I Bfed DD til she was 2 as I was worried about her calcium level given that she will only drink water.

Anyway thought MN would enjoy debating this one.

TrinityTheRedNosedRhino · 12/12/2007 23:04

hmmm
tosh me thinks

dd1 breastfed till she was 14 months (all through the night and quite a bit in the day too even at that age)

she has not one single filling (she does eat sweets and sugary things btw)
she hasn't lost a single baby tooth yet either (not sure if thast good or bad really)

she is 7 and a half

moondog · 12/12/2007 23:04

Wot fucking bollocks.
And what would she recommend then?
Ribena?

NappiesGaloriaInExcelsis · 12/12/2007 23:04

dentists say theres a risk to teeth about everything tho.

dont eat raisins, bad for teeth, dont drink milk in a bottle, bad for teeth, dont eat fruit, bad for teeth.

some things are bad for teeth but good for whole body otherwise... neeeds to be a balance. what on earth do dentists eat? not a lot, given all they rule out by the sounds of it.

drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:05

Honest that's what my dentist said on Monday. I had to take DD in as she had fallen and hurt her mouth. In chatting about her diet I mentioned that I had Bfed her till 2 and then she told me her/her profession's view that one should stop at 6 mths.

She said that the Breast milk is very sweet and stays on the teeth and rots them. Particularily at night.

oh thats right, we can have ribena 'toothkind' 'recommended by dentists' and stuffed full of carcinogenic chemical sweeteners.

take my chances with sugar, ta.

coldtits · 12/12/2007 23:06

they are called millk teeth for a reason - yes there is a (slight) risk to teeth if you feed them anything but lamb chops, water and strerident, but that's what milk teeth are for. To provide something to chew with while a child is still of breast feeding age!

drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:06

Is it sweeter than formula???

OP posts:
RGPargy · 12/12/2007 23:07

What a load of tosh!!!!!

NappiesGaloriaInExcelsis · 12/12/2007 23:07

f that were the case, it would seem something of an oversight on the part of nature/evolution no?

drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:08

I know what you mean what do dentists eat????

My dd is fond of dried fruit and will eat bugger all fresh fruit. Given that it retains most of it's vitamins I am inclined to give it to her.

coldtits · 12/12/2007 23:08

Dentists will only tell you what is best for teeth. Not many of them care very m,uch about the rest of the body, they know about teeth.

They would probably have us swallowing pill food and drinking water in order to protect the damn teeth - 'no fillings' is not worth a life of abstinence imo

drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:08

Do you think it is the profession's view????

OP posts:
ChristmasSendsMePsycho · 12/12/2007 23:09

asbolute bolocks IMO......ALL milk has some kind of sugar in it, even cows milk.

what does she suggest you feed your baby with then?????

coldtits · 12/12/2007 23:09

No I am being flippant.

mrsruffallo · 12/12/2007 23:10

I've nevr heard anything like this. I breastfed both of my dc and they heve no cavities at all.
Did your dentist explain exactly how bf effects their teeth?

howtheBOOKTHIEFstolechristmas · 12/12/2007 23:11

What Kellymom says on the subject. Just another point of view from a health professional to add to the mix

With references. Possibly some interesting reading for your dentist? CPD is always important

drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:12

No, I mean do you think the profession agree that you should stop Bfeeding at 6 mths or have I stumbled accross a strange dentist????

OP posts:
drosophila · 12/12/2007 23:13

Her explanation was that the sugar stay on the teeth and as a lot of bfeeding is done at night it stays there. She didn't say why or if it was worse that formula

OP posts:
coldtits · 12/12/2007 23:14

I was told by a HV that dentists recommend using an open topped cup for all drinks once your child is 6 months old!

I laughed and asked her if she was being sponsered by Daz!

howtheBOOKTHIEFstolechristmas · 12/12/2007 23:15

Well, that surely depends on the baby. Ds (lucky, lucky me) wasn't feeding at night by six months.

If she said that feeding through the night caused tooth decay then possibly she might have a point, though the Kellymom article seems to suggest that bm would be better for teeth than formula.

Also, why six months? Surely from whatever point your dc gets teeth? And then only at night? And then only if you think the research quoted by Kellymom is inaccurate.

ChristmasSendsMePsycho · 12/12/2007 23:16

oooh, and did you know.....dried fruit is worse than toffee, worse than any type of sweetie in fact according to my old dentist. recommemded to my children (and I do mean to them, no consulting of ME at all), that he would be far happier for them to eat chocolate than raisins/dried banana/dried apricots, even told them not to feel bad about sweeties.....COS DRIED FRIUT IS BAD!

to say I was livid would be an understatement.I was so cross I cried!!!!

even said that fruit juice was bad, and soya milk, and various other foods that in my opnion were part of a healthy balanced diet. (and as for the soya milk comment....3 of my kiddies and me are allergic to cows milk so have no choice in the matter, regardless of the sugar. would much rather the odd filling than the allergic reaction and trip to hospital!)

ok, calm down, rant over

did I say he was my OLD dentist

StarofBethleCam · 12/12/2007 23:16

That's what baby teeth are for, no?

Milk teeth another word for them

NappiesGaloriaInExcelsis · 12/12/2007 23:21

lol

blardy dentists.

uk dentists are just frustrated coz their counterparts in the uS and auz are minted and they wish they were fleecing us all/rolling in it too.
hang on, they do fleece us.
but if theyre rolling in it, they hide it well, on the whole.

mind you, i did venture into a 'local' dentist place in knightsbridge once... blimey o reilly, they were rolling in it.

am being flippant btw. in case it werent obv. [

5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 12/12/2007 23:37

OK, my grasp of dentist-type things might be limited but don't they also recommend drinking with straws etc to move stuff to back of mouth away from teeth?

And doesn't good BF position do just that with nipple in back of soft palate an' all?

Yeah, dentists, whaddaya think about that one then...?
