Green smelly poop **photos attached**

Hey, little one who is 9 weeks & ebf has been having really REALLY smelly bright green/chunky/watery poo for a week now. For 4 days it had bright red/pink stains and stringy blood in it so we went to the dr and the lab results have come back negative. I'm vegan so have cut out soy just in case. Also, I have a pretty intense letdown and lo pulls away to get her breath and then goes back on - sometimes she is full after one breast and falls asleep but most of the time she feeds from both She did have a tongue tie at birth which has stretched and snapped and we use the cross cradle plus flipple to get a deep latch. She was straining a lot but that has calmed down now and she is pooping with more ease but her poo seems to be getting smellier and chunkier and sometimes it's just liquidy. Hoping to get a referral to a paediatrician and will be chatting to LLL consultant but do any of you guys have any advice? Xx

We get poos like this when my baby is teething

Could it be teething?

Sheisfee · 02/11/2021 06:54

@Thetrainisinthestation do they absolutely stink? And sometimes have blood in? It could well be teething, she's slobbering and trying to get her entire fist in her mouth most of the time?? Do the teething nappies last a week+? I'm at a loss really!

DS2 had poos like that that continued after I cut out dairy and it turned out he was allergic to oat too and all the oat milk I was having was the culprit.

Sheisfee · 02/11/2021 07:13

@ParadiseLaundry how did you realise it was oats or what it just a guess?

Is she getting too much foremilk and not enough of the fattier hindmilk? That can cause green poo.

The blood is usually a sign of constipation, but needs to be checked out by a doctor - take her to the GP.

DS had this, a midwife told me it was because he wasn't getting enough of the rich milk at the end of the feed, only the watery foremilk. She told me to block feed 4 hours on the same breast (so he might feed several times from the same breast during this period) to make sure he was getting to the the rich milk - it worked immediately.

Cross post Mrs!

I would usually have almond or coconut milk but after reading an article about how oat was the most environmentally friendly I switched to that. When his symptoms got worse rather than better I suspected it might have been that but thought I was probably just clutching at straws. I mentioned it to the paediatrician who said it sounded likely and advised cutting it out. After that his symptoms disappeared soon after.

The allergy seemed to be confirmed a few months later when he started weaning and we accidentally gave him oat milk yogurt. He had terrible nappies and seemed to be in a lot of pain Sad

@MrsColon as I said in the post we have been to the GP.

@Throughabushbackwards thanks for this I'll definitely look into it. Did it reduce your supply at all as block feeding can?

@ParadiseLaundry oh poor little sausage! I'm glad you managed to figure it out. I've moved over to oat milk from soy and the blood has stopped but the poos are insane! How long did it take for nappies to change with your lo? We've been almost 4 days without soy now.

No, in fact it helped overall and became balanced in a really short time. DS always taking volumes of foremilk meant I was overproducing and engorged at the same time as him having the upset tummy.

Throughabushbackwards · 02/11/2021 07:35

I think that I built it up from 2 hrs each side at the start, though (10 years ago now so it is a fuzzy memory!).

Sheisfee · 02/11/2021 07:39

@Thetrainisinthestation amazing, it's worth a shot! I'll chat to my LLL about it xx

No worries! I recall the block feeding being a real turning point. It made me relax about it all in a way, it let me switch off from fussing about feeding. It was simple - left until midday, right until 3-4pm, left again until bedtime etc.
