Temporary lactose intolerance in 13 month old

DD had a virus, including gastro symptoms a couple of weeks ago and since then she's been mostly fine in the daytime but increasingly miserable at night, with what looks like abdominal pain. This morning she threw up after her morning bottle of formula, was then absolutely fine all day, but threw up again this evening after her evening breastfeed. The second vomit made the penny drop and I'm wondering if she's got secondary lactose intolerance from the virus. Seems odd that she wouldn't be vomiting until a couple of weeks later but from what I understand, it's about lactose building up so could have worsened with the continued milk feedings.

I was planning to give up breastfeeding anyway in the next month so that's not an issue but I'm wondering how best to get enough calcium in her if we temporarily cut out lactose. She's over a year so lactose free formula doesn't seem worthwhile. In thinking of trying the lactose free milk you can get in the supermarket. And maybe some probiotics? Anyone had this with a baby of this age? Any tips?

Oddly, lactose free products aren't recommended for anyone who has a lactose intolerance or allergy.

I'd give up dairy yourself if you think it's this.

There are lots of ways to replace the calcium and fat and protein from cows milk for her though. Things like green, leafy vegetables, dried figs, homemade salmon fish cakes using tinned salmon with bones, sardines on toast, eggy bread, ready brek made with a fortified plant milk etc.

It's just appeared after a bout of gastro so I'm confident it's not cow's milk protein allergy, so giving up dairy myself wouldn't make a difference (human milk also full of lactose!) But that's interesting about lactose free products, I hadn't heard that. Will do some more research and look at how we can keep the essential nutrients up - hopefully it shouldn't be for more than a couple of weeks

Temporary lactose intolerance doesn't usually last, you're right Smile
