No, the antibodies will actually help and it's much more digestible than anything else.

morocco · 10/12/2007 22:25

no, it's the best fluid you can give during a stomach bug

Breastmilk is not dairy : ) Breastmilk comes from humans, and dairy comes from cows. Breastmilk promotes gastric healing and it's important to continue feeding through a baby's illness.

NOOOO breast milk should help lo back on road to recovery, it is the easiest thing for a baby to digest

coldtits · 10/12/2007 23:30

No, dairy comes from cows. breastmilk is the one thing I would have thought would NOT irritate the stomach!

Very interesting thread. My 10.5 month old dd has had diarrhoea and vomitting for the past week. My husband phoned NHS Direct and they said to phone out-of-hours GP. The out-of-hours GP said to avoid dairy products. My husband asked if that included breastmilk and the doc said "yes" . I decided this was a load of tosh and, whilst I have tried to avoid dairy products in the tiny amount of food she has managed to take in the past week, I have continued to breast feed her to ensure she doesn't become dehydrated.

Bloddy gps

I was given this same poor advice by a young doctor in A&E.

Random interesting bf fact: in 'ye olden days' breastmilk was sometimes used for the treatment of gastric illness in adults.

Now there's a thought!

Sorry - that should have said 'bloody'.

Now you're going to be reading my posts and hearing a mancunian accent!

Well DD (aged 16 weeks) and I have both had a tummy bug this past weekend and I continued to bf on demand, and believe me, DD made a quicker recovery than me. I assume because she got some antibodies in the breastmilk. NHS Direct said I could give her water but actually by that point she was keeping breastmilk down so I didn't bother.

babycat, please, please complain about the out of hours GP's ignorance.

Dairy means coming from a cow. It is avoided (sometimes) in gastric illness because the protein in it is foreign.

This does not happen with human milk, which is not dairy.

This is not brain surgery/rocket science/advance medicine. It is common sense.

Sheesh.

Tiktok, I am trying to find the local breastfeeding specialist nurse's contact details as she came to our parent and baby group a few months ago and wanted good and bad stories about breastfeeding support locally.
